Peavey VB2 Plus 2 2x10s for under $1000...fantastic deal?

Hey all,

I am possibly in the market for a new amp and was in a local music store a couple of hours ago. This WAS an independent store that was bought out by a major Canadian chain (Long & McQuade) and as a result, they are blowing out all of the stock that was left over from the old store and which L & M doesn't normally sell. One of those brands is Peavey. They have a new VB-2 head and 2 2x10 Peavey cabs which, after taxes, I could have for $950.00...and even though they don't sell that brand, they will honour the 2-year warranty.

Just wanting some thoughts on that price and setup, if anyone is willing. I can't say I was completely floored by the sound of the amp, but I know there is a lot more tweaking that could be done, plus part of that might've been the basses that I had plugged into it. One more thing: I have a feeling that, to my ears it'd sound better with a cab that has a 15 or maybe even 18, which I could add down the road - I know that playing exclusively through 10s gives a guy that "punchy" sound, but I am not convinced that sound works for me...

Thoughts would be appreciated!

I like my VB2 a lot, but I'm not a fan of those Peavey 2x10's. I found they farted out too easy when I tried one at GC. The VB2 sounds awesome on my NV610 or my GK212 though.

If it didn't sound that great to you in the store, I'd keep looking. Maybe see if they'll sell just the amp at discount. Then find a better cab and you're set.

I am a proud owner of a VB-2. I am also a Canadian living in the U.S. so I know that prices up there are a bit higher.

That said I think $950 is a fair price for a VB-2 and two 210 cabs. I don't have experience with the cabs though, so you're on your own there.

How much is the VB-2 without the cabs?

They are asking $649 for the head and $199 apiece for the cabs...which, when I think about it, with taxes should add up to more than $950, so I'm starting to wonder if I was quoted a wrong price...

I would say that the head seems like a good deal. However, I personally would want more substantial cab(s) to accompany it. Is there any reason beyond the sale pricing that you are considering the 2 210s?

$649 is a decent deal on a new VB-2 in Canada. They go for $550US on the TB classifieds.

I'd skip the cabs.

As far as I could see those are the only stand-alone bass cabs in the place...yeah...I know what you are saying though. The sales guy, who was super nice/not at all pushy (and a ferocious bass player) seems to like the "punchiness" of the 10s, and I am sure one or both of those cabs would be fine in certain situations, but I know that at some point I'd be adding something bigger...I dunno. The only other amp I'd likely be looking at is one of those monster rigs Carvin makes (hoping to own some of their basses at some point too.) I really wish Carvin made a tube rig, because I'd probably order one up without hesitation given the quality of everything else they make.

I would have to say that if you bought the cabs with the intention of replacing them sometime in the future, I would consider the $400+ (cnd, I assume), could be well placed on a nice used cab of some type. However, I do believe that the 210's would more than likely suffice for many situations.
