PF-500 Test Drive

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi TBers,

Since I couldn't find one on YouTube, I created and posted my own test drive of my new PF-500 Ampeg Portaflex head running through my 410HLF cab. I use various basses and run through the frequency selector switch to give an overall feel.

Check it out here:

Thanks for posting that.

The Geddy Lee and the Stingray sound very nice through it.
Great demonstration on the mid selector.

In that clip, the P sounded very good. Quite natural and authoritative. The J didn't fare as well IMHO. Perhaps the EQ settings you were using were optimized for the P?

PS: Was that J tuned to something lower than normal?

Funny you should ask. I noticed at rehearsal tonight that it was still half step down from the end of the last gig, so yes - you are correct.

And I agree with you - the p and the Rick have a nice round full tone in the clip.

P-bass amazing! Rick good sounding but the J and the Musicman were lacking a bit of lows thanks for the video!

I've learned a bit about settings. I should post another vid since I've had it for a few months

Is there a lot of punch with that setup? Lot's of headroom on tap? Have any idea how a low B would fare thru that setup?

I've never played thru a 4X10 cab before, so pardon my ignorance.

(Yeah, the P sounds great!)

And after a few months, is it still your main amp?
Do you still like it?

Going with this or a GKMB, or a MBFusion...still not sure.

I have a question, I tested the amp at GC and really like the tone, but how loud it can be? Is capable for rehearsal with a loud drummer , two distorted guitars and vocals? I have an Aguilar 4x10.

It is still my one and only live amp. I play in a rock band (www.RockBoxBand.com) with a very loud (and very good) drummer and one guitar. We play loud. I've never had the volume above 1:00. And it's plenty loud. Never used it outside - July 23 we have a big outdoor gig. I'll let you know. It is just a great sounding little amp.

I can't answer the low B question - sorry. Still lots of headroom. See above about the volume. Punchiness is really very achievable with the 410. I play with the tone selector on 2 but if I boosted the mid and used 3 or 4 it may even get a scooped sound. Love this setup.

And thanks about the P. I really can't play any other bass anymore because I am so in love with that tone.

That's funny. If I order one when I get back from vacation, it will be in on time for my outdoor gig also on July 23rd..not sure if I would use it as my first gig being outdoors though.

I went to GC yesterday to get strings and while there I tried out your exact setup. Only had about 10 minutes (had other things to do) but I was pretty impressed with what I heard. Loved the tone, loved the simplicity of the amp.

I do too. The compressor is pretty decent and once you get your tones you just deal with volume. I may shoot another vid this weekend.
