Phil Jones 16H - Have you heard one? Tell me about it.

I'm in a house band so don't need to lump equipment, and I'm considering getting a Phil Jones 16H cabinet to go with my M500 head.

But, is it worth it? Regular PJPS 16B cabs say they do 30 Hz. This monster will do 20 Hz. Even though I don't have to move it, the cost gives me pause.

How much better do those last 10 Hz sound?

Makes me nervous WRT phasing of the drivers' direct output and the back wave from the drivers' rears. The thing weighs two hundred pounds already so why not run the cones in a sealed box, band-limit them at the bottom end to maybe 200 Hz, and add an eighteen to the interior to drive the FH, and of course add a 2-way crossover?

I admit I don't know boo about combination direct radiators and FHs running off the same drivers. But I do have not-so-fond memories of those tall/narrow 15" scoop bins where they take the back wave off the 15 and send it to the scoop. I recall there being a major suckout in the midbass. Maybe I'm just gun-shy about designs like this.

No but I'd like to! I had an interesting exchange with Phil regarding this cab when it was launched and the impression I got was that it sounds epic! I think a key difference between this and generic 'scoops' is the compression ratio in the horn meaning that the excursion stays low and the direct radiating vs horn output conflicts are minimised.

$250K horns is something Phil did in younger days, he's expert. I don't understand it, either, but I trust that Phil's worked it out.
