Sign in to disble this ad
I have an opportunity to get these cabs for a good price. Aside from the heavy weight can anybody give me the positives and negatives of these cabinets. Sound? Reliability? etc.
Thanks in advance.

Positive - It's pretty...

Negative - Can't handle low B string well. Farts out easily...

8T and 16B

I've used these cabs for about two years now, at least 8 hours a weekend, indoors, outdoors, freezing cold humid conditions and 96 degree direct sunlight conditions. They are built like a tank. Even with the heavy usage they still look and sound new, I baby my equipment, clean the tolex, dust the speaker grills, keep them covered when not in use, and store them in climate control when not in use.

The negatives: These suckers are heavy, if you have back problems, try the Phil Jones Neo line. The only thing I've had to replace are the casters which wore out after a year of dragging through gravel, concrete floors etc. The replacements were pretty cheap, I found them on Amazon for 7 bucks a piece or so.

The positives: Remarkable tone and clarity. I can honestly say I'm a better player because of this rig, I had to clean up my sloppy technique as the cabs articulate EVERYTHING with remarkable precision, including poor technique on my part.

I don't understand the comment about not being able to handle the low B, it's been my experience that not only does the low B sound better than my Ampeg 810AV cab, it handles a drop A with no problems! The only "farting out" these cabs ever did was one gig where all of our equipment was getting starved for power. I had to back off the volume for that gig, otherwise I've never had an issue with it. The speakers push a huge amount of air, especially at the end of a song if I want to make a swell by engaging the preamp, bumping the low freqs and pushing the amp to feedback.

I wouldn't say they are for everyone, they definitely have their own character, very hi-fi, never muddy or distorted.

Lots more information here if you want to dig some more:

These big PJB cabs DO NOT fart out easy
or at least I can't get them to easily
before the amps or my ears throw in the towel.

A lack of enough power is the only reason these cabs would fart out in my experience. I use the PJB M-500 head, it maxes out around 700W, and based on Tom Bowlus' review of the head I crank the power up ALL the way and play at just under half volume for most venues.

There is another guy with the same set of cabs on the Dingwall Forum who throws 4000W at them! He reports no problem at all, the speakers are very hungry little critters!

I use a PJB rig with my Conklin 7 string, and it's never sounded better.

I have not tried the 8T/16B, but I owned the 6T/9B for a while (and still own two 8B's and two 4B's) and my experience has been that PJB cabs love: A.) tube power or B.) high-current "good" solid state power. My experience has also been that they sound a bit thin, wimpy, and uninspiring with lower-wattage (& lower current) solid state heads.

With the "right" head, though, these cabs are really excellent, IME/IMHO. Another thing to note is that the articulation extends all the way down to the lows, which can sound a bit weird at first, if you are used to hearing more of you articulation come from the mids/highs (with a blooming low end, beneath).

Hi there

as I am re-animating my bass ambitions, I currently look for a good combination of head and speaker. I'll be in the lucky position to have a Markbass Momark 500 and a Glockenklang Soul II for extensive testing. At the same time I found an option for a Phil Jones 8T 16B Speaker. I can imagine that the Hifi approach of both Glockenklang and Phil Jones might match quite well, what's your opinion? Anyone tested the combination?
