Phil Jones Bass cabs with an all tube head?

Sign in to disble this ad
i love how even the response is on the phil jones cabs and am blown away by the clarity, but i tend to like that tube colouration to my sound.
is it possible to get the best of both worlds?

i was thinking a mesa 400+ into the 16B & 8T cabs.
or maybe an SVT?

i am considering tuning my new 6 string F#BEADG which is what peaked my interest in the phil jones stuff to begin with.
what do you think?
has anybody tried this combo?

It's hard to image that such a pairing would sound bad. *bump*

EDIT:

The folks here may have some tube-->piranha insight:

Our own Mr Bowlus has commented a few times how well he likes the pirhanas driven with tubes. Wish I had some when I also had my DB680+DB728.

Yup, I have had great results driving my PJB cabs with tube heads. The Sadowsky SA200 into the 6T/9B stack was really quite awesome, but my Traynor also sounded great with those cabs.

I now own both a Phil Jones M-500 and one of those Holy Grail all-tube Sadowsky SA200 bass amps (only 100 ever manufactured before retired), which I pumped last night through my PJB 6T+9B cabs. For those wondering, I find the combination to be a perfect marriage for my Alembic Series I. The tone is unbelievable! Can it get better than this? Well, my Phil Jones M-500 renders me precision capability for zeroing in that perfectly balanced bass output across the entire neck, so I came up with this idea of going stereo out from the blue Alembic power supply to BOTH cab combinations after completing my cab setup by finding yet another PJB 9B. (Anyone willing to part with theirs?) I just acquired a second 6T cab last week for roughly half the price. It's sitting on my 18" BagEnd, which NOW looks like a fish out of water.

UPDATE: I'd consider trading my BagEnd for a PJB 9B. Think I'm on to something here. The overall tone is already to die for! Expensive setup? Yes. Better to purchase used than new, but still there's no way getting around spending significant chunks if your goal is to ascend to the summit of sound quality. I'm on my way and believe I've found it in cabs and amps that are easily portable from home to gig and back. I'm discovering that it's certainly worth the risk when electing to acquire high end pro audio bass equipment. You truly do get what you pay for! Both Sadowsky SA200 amp & Phil Jones bass equipment are NOT overpriced. They're just expensive and rightfully so. Phil's bass amps, combos and cabs are worth every penny. Anyone who states differently is either jealous or a hostile competitor. Highly recommended!
