Pinhole in dus cap causing buzzing?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a GK SBX plus 410

Speaker started buzzing today at practice, mostly on lower notes. Upon closer inspection I discovered a place in the dustcap of the buzzing speaker that appears to have been patched with some sort of black silicone material. Im thinking the patch job may have failed causing the buzz. Would a hole that is say, an eighth of an inch long on the dustcap cause a speaker to buzz?

I pushed in on the speaker and there doesn't seem to be any binding or scratchiness. No other visible concerns. All mounting screws are tight.

I've had some JBLs that buzzed after a hole was poked in their aluminum dust caps. I ended up just cutting away the cap flush with the cone.

You might find a better solution though.

If it's not electrical intermittent connections at low freqs or the wires inside the cab touching the back of the cone - then maybe what sounds like a repair has failed.

Is this silicon where it ought to be - around the periphery or is there just some of it in an odd place?

You never know what the true history is when you find a repair on a used piece of gear - so anything's possible.

Just for kicks, try different EQ setting s to see if it goes away with the same note, less LOWs or less HIGHs on the knobs.

Just because I want to know, mostly - but leave no turn unstoned I say.

It looks like a screwdriver or something similar pictured the dust cap at some point and the person patched the whole with the silicone stuff.

Im just wondering if a small hole like that in the dust cap would cause a speaker to buzz.

Unless something just broke loose inside the motor area, and the repair to that seal is covering a sin committed to the motor by the previous owner or the guy who made the 'repair' then maybe - but I think there's something else going on here.

Do remember if it was a sealed cabinet or ported?
