It distorts early because at 8 ohms it's only drives 80W. Sadly, I've just read that the speakers are in fact 30W 32-ohm drivers already wired in parallel so you can't get the impedance any lower. I wouldn't feed it any more than 80W of bass guitar anyway. Guitar speakers are not made for deep excursion, you can damage them permanently with too much low end.

What you've got is a great bargain for $50, but it's not practical for bass. You should be able to get at least $150 for the cab from a guitarist. It would be a great addition to a Marshal slant cab. The amp is something of a swiss army knife, good for a jam spot or a back-up etc.

Agreed. But I could hear the slapping of the frets over the amp and cab just before distortion while right in front of it.
I have a 25 watt guitar amp I was using for bass before I got the Peavey combo, and it was way louder than this thing.
It's that kind of seriously low volume.

I will get a chance to check it out in the morning.

You're absolutely right. I could easily fix/clean them up and flip 'em to a guitarist.

Lots of possibilities....I like that.

Boys…the verdict is in…

The V4 cab had one speaker out of phase. All speakers are CTS (Oct 1973) 8 ohm in series/parallel.
Because the amp has issues, all I had to drive it with was a Nady 100 watt powered mixer.
While it got loud, it reminded me that it IS a guitar cab (low end fart). But man, has this thing got some wholesome mid goodness to it.

The Peavey amp (dated 1978 and PDF schematics from Peavey) has issues as originally suspected. The good news is they used common transistors, like $2.50 each at Mouser.
It’s got some cool retro 70’s vibe effects, so I might throw a few bucks at it just for fun.

If nothing else, I could clean it up, repair it, sell it, or use it as trade for something at GC.

Thanks again for the help!
