Please help me plan amplification for a small tour!

Hey all, I'm working through the gear side of planning some tour dates and would really appreciate some input.

I currently play an Eden WT-800B through an Eden 4x10 XLT - we have a number of upcoming shows that are 5+ hours away, as well as a three-week tour through Oklahoma in June. Music style is funk/jazz/soul jazz, taking two smaller cars because we don't have a van and with 5-6 people and their gear there won't be enough space in the car for a 4x10 so I'm thinking about downsizing to a 2x10. As much as the Eden forum suggests purchasing a 2x10 XST to go with my XLT I'm not entirely set on purchasing another Eden cab. There are a few options I see here:

- purchase a 2x10 that will work well alone or in tandem with the 4x10
- purchase a 2x10 that will replace the 4x10
- purchase a different speaker combination that someone here suggests

I'm sorry if this post has been vague in any way... that's the situation as I see it now, any feedback/ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to sorting this out.

rent/borrow a small trailer......if you can get by with one car,the fuel savings would pay for it and you can keep your gear....

Thanks, I'm aware that in a better scenario a van/trailer would be the way to go but it isn't going to happen on this tour and doesn't help me in any way. A different cabinet will, though.

Are you unhappy with the Edens? What would you like to improve on them or see different in your next cab?

I'm satisfied with the 4x10 XLT, and not opposed to buying an Eden 2x10 if I can find a good price - I'm just trying not to limit myself to one brand, trying to get a feel for what's out there from people more knowledgeable than me.

I would buy a 210 if I were in your situation. One of the ideal ways is that you can sell your 410 and buy 2 210s so that you have another 410 configuration which is way easier for the transportation. I suggest the TC electronic rs210 if you're going to buy 2 210 cabs, you can buy them (brand new ones) cheaper than the big stores on ebay if you do some search and deal.

I've been considering the dual 2x10 setup for a few months. The problem is that I gig pretty regularly and couldn't afford time between selling the 4x10/buying a new cab... would have to get some funds together to buffer the expenses. That would be much more convenient for travelling though. I'll check that out - I've played through a TC 2x10 before but don't know which model. Really loved the tone hooked up to a Markbass Little Mark Tube 800. The RS210 looks great, not sure how it would like having my WT-800 stacked on top though. Hopefully I can find one around my area to try out.

you can definitely put wt800 on rs210. the cabs are pretty solid, compact and light. most of all, for the quality, they are cheap! they are normally $499 online but you can obviously get it cheaper. I got it for 399 shipped from GC by using coupon and I saw some people used Ebay for even more lower price.

I would recommend these Orange cabs. Tiny size, huge sound. Tried the 2x12 and it sounded massive.

I'm looking into some Epifani cabs, both the UL and PS models as well as the TC cab. I have a bit of time before we head out, so I don't need to rush a purchase, but I also feel like I should pick up the cab and test it at gigs before I'm out on the road and am stuck with it. Guess I just need to see how my wallet feels about this situation...

When space is a problem the Orange SP212 puts out a massive sound and fits in the front seat.

Through an interesting series of events my drummer has acquired an SWR Super Redhead combo. 2x10, 360 watts. It didn't hold up too well in rehearsal last night but consider the fact that it was going up against a Hammond B3 and Leslie stack. I think the tone is decent and it should put out enough power to handle this three-week tour.

There seems to be a problem with... something in the cabinet. When we pushed it past ~3/4 power the speakers would distort heavily. He's going to get it checked out next week - but a solution may have come up without me dropping any cash.

Have you considered building a fEARful? I'm going to do so soon, and I think you would get what you need: lots of sound in a smaller package than a 410 (if you go with a 12/6).

The problem is that a 210 will not replace a 410. It might come close in tone, but you will lose alot in overall volume. I would look at maybe a 212 or maybe even (2) 12" cabs. It will change your tone, but will come much closer to the volume you are used to. JMHO of course.

I agree.. a 210 will not be able to handle the volume level you will need.

And you will end up wrecking the drivers.....in my past experience

yeah, ditch the 10's...Definitely give 12's a shot; I haven't had the chance to play the new orange 2x12 but I'm sure it sounds awesome and will probably be close to as loud as your 4x10 if you have it on the stage in a good spot, elevated. I don't know why players/companies are so stuck on 10's for bass; that's a whole other thread discussion though...
