Please help: my amp shuts off!

Sign in to disble this ad
Sorry if this problem is covered before, but I did search with no results.

I bought a brand new Orange Terror bass head and a Ampeg svt 410hlf cab from Thomann.de and have played them about 5 hours now with very low gain and volume levels. Problem is that the amp shuts off randomly (has done that two times) during use. Both time I used heavy fuzz (ehx big muff), but that shouldn't make a difference, should it?

Could this somehow happen because it's still so new or do you think that it's clearly damaged? (hope not, it'd be horrible to send this back, because I'd use this next thursday in an important gig and I don't have any backup amps)

Thank you so much if you can help!!!

Is the amp abnormally hot when it shuts down?

Had a 400rb that did that, it turned out to be a loose fuse socket. That might be something worth checking.

Thanks for the tip! I checked it, but it seem to be all right...

the problem is that it's under warranty and it's a good thing you found it when you did. send it back.

I recently bought a used Fender Bassman 400 2-10 that drops its volume after a couple of hours of playing. I'm thinking something is overheating...does anyone else have any experience with this amp?

With 5 hours use I really hope that warranty is still good. Use it. Stuff should work when you buy it.

have you cleaned the effects loop jacks lately? sometimes that clears stuff like that up.

To the op, +1, send that Orange amp back. You'll need to rent or borrow another amp for your gig, but soon you'll have another brand new Terror, that works.

I had an Eden head that shut off to protect itself. Infuriating, I say when my amp needs protecting! If the Orange has some safety feature (and I doubt it) maybe it's triggering at a wrong level. But def. send it back. I guarantee, whoever the manufacturer is they're expect a percentage of returns - that's just how most of them are made.

Make sure you are using the original power cord... picking up a skinny one that looks the same [but aint] you can collapse the straw by sucking too hard - but yeah after checking the simple stupid stuff, send it back.

Have you verified the problem at a different location, to be sure it isn't bad power?

I simply don't understand this, but people who own amps that are new and still within warranty, try to figure out what's going on with their equipment when it's turning off. For crying out loud, send it back - IT'S UNDER WARRANTY!! You'll get a new one most likely when you get it back.

My Carvin BX500 started going into protect mode and shutting down after I owned it for 9 mths. I sent it back. It was still under warranty, I ended up getting a brand new one and guess what . . . it doesn't shut down anymore - it's brand new.

Just had to say it.

It's going to the tech on Tuesday. It's not like I've not got an alternate: the malfunction "forced" me to play through my Mesa/Boogie Walkabout Scout 1x15 this afternoon and evening, instead. Oh, the horror!

Hi.

As the Thomann warranty is 3 years, just send the head back. Or more precisely, send a notification to Thomann and they will arrange for a pickup and they will deliver a new one right to Your doorstep.

Intermittent problems are PITA to diagnose and for a new product like that it may be even impossible as the schematics are probably nowhere to be found.

(un-)fortunately the skinny power cord or bad power aren't concerns over here, so those can be ignored pretty safely.

Regards
Sam
