Plotting my new rig - Mesa + Avatar

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all, I'm in the process of looking for a new rig, since my current setup - Yorkville XS800 + XC808 - is too much of a pain to move, especially by myself, and the sound leaves something to be desired.

I'm thinking of going with an Avatar 410+210 stack (with black tolex and wheat grills ). This should provide enough power when I want/need it, and flexibility when I don't.

As for amps, I tried several through a few different 410 cabs today: Ampeg SVT-4PRO, Mesa M-Pulse 600, GK 1001RBII (all through a GK 410 cab), and Mesa M6, Mesa M9, and Mesa Big Block 750 (all through a Mesa 410 cab). Out of all of these heads, the one that stood out head and shoulders above the rest was the M9. I loved the M6, but the added compressor, EQ and extra power of the M9 were hard to beat. This thing is insanely loud, and I can only imagine it pumping through 6 10's. The GK was second on my list, and it is a lot less $$ than the M9, but not quite as powerful and the sound of the M9 was clearly better (to my ears).

So that gets me to my point: what do you think of pairing an Avatar 410+210 stack with a Mesa M9? Has anyone tried it (or with an M6)? I'd love opinions/comments, since as soon as I pull the trigger on the cabs, there's no going back... Cheers!

Have you played the Avatar cabs before? If you like them, I suggest going for them! The Mesa M9 should serve you well. Make sure both cabs are 8 ohms and you get some sort of return policy. 30 days is plenty of time to test gear out.

a 2x10 and a 4x10 of the same ohm rating will split the output evenly.....better to go with 2 x 4x10's or 2 x 2x10's,or a single 6x10

Jim is right. Two lightweight 410's from Avatar might be the ticket.

Look at it this way - Both cabs will get the same wattage. The 410 will probably do just fine with this # of watts while the 210 may be stressing itself to keep up with that same # of watts. The sound will be good if they are same drivers, but the overall usefullness of the rig is diminished.

If you want to go 210 + 410, then you should get the 210 in 8 ohm and 410 in 4 ohm.

But that is not much of a down size.

That Yorkie rig is very nice, IMO.
