Having built many amps over the years I have decided to build a fliptop to go with my TL606 cabinet. I was originally going to build a cir 1968 B-15n, fixed bias, bright and deep switches. Now I am looking at the B-18n's thinking that this would also work. With the 7027a power tubes I can imagine that this amp would make slightly more power, yeilding more headroom.

I know that this is purely subjective are people's thoughts on the early vs late fliptops. With the different preamp configuration and phase inverter how much different does the 18 sound compared to the 15's? Thanks.

I can't help with a comparison between a B15N and a B18N but if you're thinking of building a head you may find this interesting:

If you have built many amps then it should be a simple matter for you to marry the B15 front end to a say 100W power stage. It's not hard.

I loved the sound of the 18...but never played a 15.

I'd go for THAT.

I have a 63, and have had a chance to play an early 70's with the ultra hi/ ultra lo switch. Even though the 63 has the classic sound - I actually preferred the sound of the 70's model with the ultra lo engaged.

Just the info I've been looking for. Obviously I could blend a bunch of preamps and power stages together. I've found that if you build some wacky mutt of an amp regardless of sound you will always have a tough time moving it should you choose to sell it. With a clone regardless of cosmetics the sell much easier

Why not mate a B18 Pre amp to say, a V4 Power amplifier stage?
