Pot stripped on my GK 700RB-II

Sign in to disble this ad
I was cleaning some troublesome pots on my Gallien-Krueger 700RB-II with some DeOxit spray, and somehow the last pot appears to have stripped somehow, like, the entire thing. I don't even really know how this happened, seeing as I cleaned them all the same way and didn't experience any difficulties till I got to the last one (doesn't that just figure ).

What should I do? Take it to the nearest local music store? Will the pot need to be replaced? I'm guessing (without opening up the amp), that the pot spinning probably messed up the lead wires and now those will probably have to be re-soldered at the very least.

Any advice/explanation?

the pot is spinning? it sounds to me like the NUT is loose. Unless it was totally broken..... but i think that would be hard if you just applied some contact cleaner.

I actually am thinking now that the nut, not the pot itself, is stripped.
How could the washer be "loose"? It just sits there under the nut. (Sorry if that came off sounding like a ridiculous question.)

I'm pretty sure KramerBassFan was talking about the nut, not the washer.

Instead of a music store you should check GK's website and find an authorized GK repairman. I have that head in a 2x10 combo and I've opened it and found that the pots are soldered to a circuit board.

Hopefully nothing inside is effected too badly. And as a poster said before me, G-K has "authorized" repair-personnel for a reason. Cheers.

I'm pretty sure the nut is just messed up. Even if it's not, all it will cost me is running down to the hardware store and finding a comparable nut to buy. If that doesn't fix it, then I'll go the certified-GK-repair route (which, hopefully I won't have to).

<Nods> You would have to be nuts to get a certified-GK-repair for a simple nut replacement. Cheers.

If it turns out to be more than just the nut, you can search out a certified GK repair. But, depending on where you live, that might involve either shipping or a long trip. I live in MA, and the closest certified GK guy is (or was about a year ago when I had this sort of issue) in Maine. GK will provide temorary certification to a good repair guy/gal if they contact GK - this is good for warranty work. I went this route, and although it took a few phone calls, the work was done by my amp/speaker shop with GK-granted certification. No charge to me and he got paid.

This nut is a b**** to get off; any suggestions?
It spins just fine until a certain point, then it won't spin any further by itself; it simply starts to spin with the entire pot under it.

Open the amp, hold the pot, and then remove the nut. Then find a nut for it. You should contact GK, I'm pretty sure they will send you one if you ask them !

Alright, I will send them an email. Thanks for the suggestion!

And in regards to the first bit: I can't really hold the pot from the inside; it's virtually impossible to get my hand inside of there and hold that specific pot, one which is pretty much smack dab in the middle of the front side of the amp. :/

Update:

I just went ahead and got a slew of extra parts for my GK amp (screws, etc.) including a replacement pot for the one that's been giving me trouble. The problem is a corresponding nut didn't come with it. :/ Help!?
