Potential Cab Swap - need your insight!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys -

I need some help and some knowledge on a potential cab swap.

I currently play two Carvin BRX 10.2 neo cabs with a Carvin B1500 head and Musicman Stingray 5. I sold my Carvin (see a trend here?! ) Redeye 4x10 to fund buying the two 10.2's For those unfamiliar - these cabs are 600W, 4ohm each. They are CRAZY loud and way more articulate than my previous cab. My issue is that they can't quite seem to dial my tone in properly. They sound great right up close, but across my practice space or at shows they seem to not put out enough low end thunder. Everyone can hear me quite well and has said that they are nice and clear, but I just can't seem to get the warmth and thump I'm used too.

So, I was perusing my local Craigslist and found a guy with an Avatar 2x12 and 1x12 who would be interested in a straight trade. The Avatars are 8ohm, 500W cabs each based on the listing.

I'm looking for any feedback, experience you've had with either setup, and for someone to tell my what effect changing from my combined 2ohm load to a combined 4ohm load will have on overall volume, etc.

Any insight would be great! Thanks!

i've always been curious about 12s, if i were you, i would look at the used value of each of these cabs. check ebay, if they sell for roughly the same price, then you can't loose. in theory, the 12s will push more air then that 10s, and the bigger box size should give you more bottom.

like i said if they are worth roughly the same i'd say go for it. having 2 small cabs is nice in that you can use less speakers for smaller shows and more if you need more sound.

Do you vertically (end to end) stack the cabs, or stack them 410 style? Vertical stacking can make a big difference.

For splitting the signal, I jump rather than split. Just go from one place to the next.

4x10 style for the time being. I'll try them vertical tonight. ...It just looks silly that way to me. Also, from what I've read (and I could be very wrong), it seems vertical stacking removes "boomyness" and helps to add clarity. I'm kinda looking to go the other way.
