Power Amp Decision

Sign in to disble this ad
I need help choosing between two differant Behringer Power Amps. I'm not looking for brand bashing, just help making a "more bang for your buck" decision. I'm looking at the EP4000 or the EPQ2000. The amp has to be able to pull double duty as the situation requires. First task would be driving a Carvin BR810 1200W @ 4 ohms and a Peavey TFX 412 1200W @ 4 ohms, with a GK BL600 as a Preamp. Second duty will be running a small PA consisting of two Yamaha SM15 500W program, 1000W peak @ 8 ohms each. My budget will only allow for one power amp to due both tasks, obviously not at the same time. I want to get the most bang for my money, without overdriving the speakers in either setup. Also, I may be adding some 18" Subs to the PA later on down the road. Any help in making this tough decision would be greatly appreciated.

Hey mate,
I guess everyone is elsewhere. You might look into Carvin power amps. There are very solid and the price isn't that much more than the Berringers for what you get in qaulity upgrades in my opinion. You can find them used at great prices sometimes. Best of luck!

EP4000. Old-school design (probably more reliable in this case), switchable Hi pass filters, more power. Just be aware the power ratings are for peak only. But it should do fine for your needs.

Behringer

I was talking to one of the guys who runs a local shop near my house. He is a Behringer dealer and a bass player. He recommended the EP4000 out of the Behringer line. For the money, he said it was one of the best values out there. I actually know the repair guy in the shop. He says they are well made and doesn't see them in for repair very often.

Sounds like they can hold up to some serious punishment. Thanks for the advice and the success story. I'm really leaning towards the EP4000 at this point.

Thanks for the advice guys. I pulled the trigger on the EP4000, $299 shipped to my door. Can't beat that. I'll let you guys know how it works out. Can't wait to hear the 810 and 412 together. It ought to be pretty brutal.

Read the specs. Only recently has Behringer started publishing "RMS" ratings
All their copy ads are peak ratings. Somewhere there's the truth, but if any amp doesn't have eia, eiaj, or ftc in the specs then they're not rated to any standard that you could compare to another amp with the same standard of rating. It's not like what you can do for amplifiers for home entertainment. The FTC cares about those.

Watts are over rated in general anyhow
