power amp + pre vs amphead wattage

Sign in to disble this ad
when I look at tube power amps, they all seem to have lower wattage than I am used to with normal bass amps; normally something lower than 150 in a bass amp would be scoffed at, but it seems par for the course with tube power amps. What gives?

If a tube amp were to have massive power, it would weigh over 200lbs.

Err, I think I worded it wrong. Sort of re thought this, Ive seen tube amps that are well over 700 watts, but when I look for just a power amp, it always seems to be much lower.

Ohhhhhh, okay. This makes a lot of sense now. So, how many watts would a tube power amp need to be equivalent to say, a 450 watt solid state amp.

Oh, I always heard tube power amps tended to be louder than solid states. Welp.

They can seem louder because they naturally compress the signal. SS amps of the same power rating with compressors can seem just as loud.

Slightly on topic, are there any 300-400 watt tube amp heads that go for a reasonable price?

Define reasonable.

Not many around that can truly deliver the wattage with the THD figures normally associated with tube amp rating. And that with only vintage tubes originally designed for those amps.

The CP tubes tend to be somewhat shy on the power.

Sam

Uh, for a hybrid amp, is there much in the sub 800$ range that is decent? I really have no concept of the pricing on amps.
