Power amps: QSC PLX vs RMX vs ???

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been looking at amps for a while right now. I've got a Bergantino AE 410 now, and I need a power amp for it. I want something that provides both power and clarity. I've heard good things about the QSC PLX series, but it's out of my price range (even used), and I need to buy a power amp in the next few weeks. What would I sacrifice to go down to the cheaper RMX models or Carvin brand? Are there any other suggestions for a power amp?

Thanks guys,
John

Carvin is good. RMX's are heavy overpriced junk (in my opinion). Crown's got two brands out that are lighter and cheaper - XTI (from ebay) and XLS drivecore.

If you're just looking to run one cab, I'd go with an XLS Drivecore 1500. Good price, lots of power, decent DSP, quite affordable.

The plan is to add a 210 or possibly a 410 in the next few years, depending on my needs. I also have a 115 I'll run in certain situations.

^^^You don't like the RMX model, but do you think the PLX is a quality head?

PLX is high quality stuff. I've owned a couple. One PLX and one PLX2. Great amps.

Still overpriced compared to the cost/weight ratio of the Crown stuff, however.

I have been very happy with QSC PLX power amps.

Curious what you base this comment on?

IMO, they are relatively heavy, but overpriced junk...I disagree.

There have been some misc. problem reports (as with many manufacturers), but a lot of people use and like them and have no problems (other than the weight).

2nd- hand they can be procured for a fairly good bargain price.
If I ran across a good-condition used RMX1850HD for a good price, I would have a hard time overlooking it.
They are hardy, decent amps.

Heavy and expensive. If you look at their new prices, the things they compare to are generally higher wattage, smaller, and lighter weight. Sure, they can be OK deals used, but inevitably worse than anything else.

With what's out now I would never carry one of them unless it was borderline free. I've hauled my singer's RMX enough times that I'd rather eat glass.

Carvins were mentioned, and I've been looking at this one : 1000 watts into 4 ohms, bridged, 10 lbs.
