My advice is: Unless you're experienced with switchmode power supplies (which I'm not), don't expect to repair one.

I'd like to find out if the power supply is a switching power supply, if it is then I wouldn't need a step down transformer.

I own one of these and looking at the manual it does have a switch mode power supply but that doesn't mean it can "switch" between different voltages in different parts of the world. It also mentions different models for the US, Australia, Japan, the UK, Europe and South Korea. This would seem to point to the individual models having different voltage requirements. An explanation of switch mode power supplies: Switched-mode power supply

i see, thanks! well i took a look inside mine, and it seems that everything inside is labelled 250v, even the fuse is 250v 5a. so what I'm wondering is, does the amplite take 240v?

Only in Australia but the UK, Europe and Argentina are 230v. Japan is 100v and the USA is 120v. I don't have mine on hand right now so I'm not sure what the internal 250v labeling might be. What country did you buy it in? You taking it somewhere else?

I bought it from the US, but I live in Singapore (Asia). Didn't have much of a choice because the dealer for Singapore will take a minimum of 6 months to bring it in. When i read it online I thought I saw 110v-240v but after getting the amp and checking online again I realised that it's specific to zones. Right now I'm using a step down transformer to power it but that thing is at least twice the size and about 5 times heavier!

Oh man, that's a shame. It looks like for now you're stuck with it. There's nothing else like the Amplite either....yet. The Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 would be the closest thing I know of that would do it for you. I've used a Shuttle 6.0 (that switches voltage) and I own a Shuttle 3.0 (that doesn't switch voltages) and they are great amps. If I weren't so attached to my old Raven Labs preamp I'd probably be using a shuttle 6.0.
