Poweramp Output Jacks: How Do I Avoid Using Banana Clips?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am trying to use the two channels of my peavey DPC 1000 for two seperate applications. 1. To use with my bass (using VT Bass as pre) with a seperate cab. 2. To run one vocal monitor. This is just for rehearsals so it does not have to be overly loud. Each channel will have its own pre.

My question is: How can I skip the banana clips and just use 1/4 speaker cables? I tried plugging one 1/4 into channel A out (both output jacks) I also tried using a Y cable and plugging into both Channel A output jacks at once. Neither of those things worked. The only thing that worked is plugging a banana clip into the banana slots exactly like the diagram below depicts. The problem is I only have one banana clip cable, but I have lots of 1/4 speaker cables.

If the only way to do it is to use the banana clip cable to the monitor/speaker what are the 1/4 outputs for?

What am I doing wrong?

This is the only instructions I can find in the manual pertaining to this:

Quote:
Channel A

"There are two 1/4" jack and one binding post outputs provided for the connection of external speakers. Minimum total impedance is 4 ohms."

Channel B

"There are two 1/4" jack and one binding post outputs provided for the connection of external speakers. Minimum total impedance is 4 ohms."

Are you sure that the power amp isn't switched to bridge mode?

You would be better served using speakons.

Get one of these:

They also make a banana that adapts to a 1/4 male, but I didn't see a female one.

Y cable ? Does channel A still work with the banana ? Seems like a Y cable used that way could smoke the amp...

You should be able to use a pair of phone to phone speaker cables. It is immaterial what channel goes where so I'll just use examples. Channel one output to bass cabinet. Channel two to vocal monitor. Channel one input from VT preamp. Channel two input from vocal mixer. Amp should be switched to stereo, not mono or bridge. The system should work fine this way.

If you are still getting just one channel, exchange both sets of input and output cables. If the same channel that worked before still works with the change of cabling then there is a problem with the amp. If the opposite channel now works a problem with the cables or signal supply.

If you're using known good cabs, and known functional 1/4" SPEAKER cables, and the amp is not in bridge mode, the 1/4" outputs should work.

1/4" while fine for their original intended use, low current signal connections, are crap for high current speaker leads.

Nuetrik Dual banana plugs are cheap (about $2), and are easy to install, without solder. I suggest that you modify some of your 1/4" SPEAKER cables, and use the far superior banana plugs.
