Practice amp: Peavey Max 110 - opinions?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I'm looking for a neutral-sounding ten inch practice amp (I'll be using a Sansamp VT Bass through it).

CL has a used one in great condition near me in Vermont. I'm considering it but thought I'd bring the question to the Genius Bar here at Takbass.

Who's used/owned/loved/hated this?

Is its reliability typical of Peavey stuff?

With the vintage/modern switch, can it still be set for a neutral sound?

Totally underpowered?

Thanks.
Bill

As a personal practice amp, it's perfectly fine.
As a rehearsal amp, it depends on the situation. If your accompanying an acoustic player or 2, it's fine. If your in a typical rock type situation, it's a complete waste.

I have not played the amp, but generally I don't find Peavey very neutral sounding. Sorry if I am not much help.

Oh, and Peavey stuff is generally rock solid.
For practice, you may want to consider a pair of nice headphones(ex. Sony MDR7506) into a Pandora or Tascam Bass Trainer...or many folks run their headphones & a CD/MP3 player into a mini mixer.

+1. Expecially the older Peavey stuff.

I often practice through a $99 P.O.S. Hiwatt Bulldog 30 combo. As long as it can be heard over my iPod when I learn new music, it works for me.

I've owned them.. you didn't say what "good deal" is.

For practice.. Amplug.. mini mixer etc.

This is a personal practice amp.. not really designed for small venues..

Kinda spoiled. I got used to an Ampeg BA110. Used it several hours everyday for like 8 years. Something's gone funky with it and sometimes there's a crackle sound and the volume goes down by about 90%. If I'm patient, there's another crackle and it's back. I can't diagnose it so....

That sucka was perfect. With a VT Bass in front of it, she competed with drums, electric guitard, etc. during rehearsals. Wish I could fix it for another 8 years.

Thanks, everybody for the help. Keep it coming.

Had one a few years ago. Built like a tank, ALWAYS worked.

As other have said, a solid personal practice amp/acoustic jam amp. Not the right choice for a full on band rehearsal however.
