Pre-Amp Tubes in a DB750

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys! I will have a new to me DB750 on Tuesday. I spoke to Marco at Aguilar and he suggested that I put a fresh set of tubes in it. This is my first time looking at tubes. Any suggestions on what tubes tubes I should consider or what I should expect? I am a noob when it comes to tubes!

Thanks

Put a Telefunken in your V1 and keep the rest stock, IMO. That Tele makes a real significant difference in tightening up the low end just right while keeping the inherent sound of the amp. I haven't heard an amp yet that compares! It'll set you back around the 60 90 dollar range, but definitely worth it!

Do not throw a JJ in there unless you like clean and hifi. IMO, you can might as well grab a lighter calss D amp if you're gonna go that route anyway. I swapped the two tubes a couple of times and the difference is night and day, like two different amps!

Thanks bro! There are some issues that Marco said are tube related and I should swap them all out. I will definitely check out the telefunken!

There is a long ongoing thread on this topic here: The DB750 and the Telefunken/Amperex Tube Swap!

Telefunken are best, but for the money I'd give the TungSol re-issues a try. I compared them to the also great JJ/Teslas and the TungSols made the Aguilar sound much less wooly with more tightness and definition, IMO, IME. etc etc.

Anyone having positive experience with swapping the pre amp tubes in the DB751?

What is giving you good results?
Do I stand to gain anything?
