Pre- and post- gain on a preamp

Sign in to disble this ad
I am entering the wonderful world of rack mounted gear and have a 1990's Peavey Bassist preamp with pre and post gain. Any thoughts and recommendations for settings for the pre- and post- gains would be much appreciated.

The owner's manual has no suggestions.

BTW, I play a five string Ibanez w older Ibanez active pickups.

Thanks.

What type of tone/sound are you looking for?

Clean, undistorted, transparent, no clipping of any kind. I want to hear my bass with the cleanest sound the amp can produce. Thanks.

Try a high post gain, as high as you can without excess hiss (given 90's Peavey gear), then pre gain to taste.

Generally the formula would be the other way around, and you may find this line up to be too sterile sounding...

I'm guessing crank the post gain and dial down the pre gain...just a guess though as I know nothing about that pre.

Keeping the pre down and the post up sounds right to me, too. Using the amount of hiss from the high post as the deciding factor in the relative levels on each seems like a good idea.
