Pre/power amp question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all,

I'm thinking of getting a Crown XTi 1000 power amp to run my 2x15 with(cab handles 1200 watts and the amp puts out 1400 watts at 4 ohms bridged). I play in a death metal band, so the power is good to have. My question is, can my Line 6 Pocket POD drive it, or do I need a proper preamp?

Hey: I think you will just have to try it and see. My little POD seems prone to feeding back, so ifn I were you I would start at low levels and slowly work up. But I don't see any harm in trying. It might work. At my last rehearsal I left my pre in the bag and ran my active bass directly into my QSC, and it was loud and sounded great.

Have fun and good luck!

I've never had FB problems with my POD... I'm just wondering if it's output is hot enough, because I think you have to have line level to properly drive these things.

You could know for sure by checking the specs for both. Output level, and required input level.

A normal pod will drive a power amp in the line level output setting. Don't know about the pocket pod.

I can't find the max output on the POD, or the min input on the Crown. The Specs did show the max in on the Crown was 22 db.

I may just get a Behringer SansAmp clone to drive it.

The XTi1000 has in input sensitivity of 1.4V at 4 ohms/ch in stereo mode and will be slightly less in bridge mode.

Line 6 sez that you can plug into a guitar amp or take headphone out to the PA.
They don't say anywhere what the output levels are but the headphone-out should give you plenty of voltage
to drive the XTi. I would suspect a lot of noise at high output/headphone levels, so you just need to try it
and see how it is. I've never had any feedback problems with my BassPod XT but don't know anything about
the PocketPod. I would do like Atom Bomb says and turn it up bit at a time until you get to where you want
to go or Not.

Sounds like a Sweet rig!

I hope it will be.

If Adam Bomb says he drove his QSC with his bass, I think it might be possible.

My guitarist has no idea what he's about to deal with.

Dunno if it's an option but check out the Crown XLS 1500, it's lighter with the same output. Not sure about the pocket POD but I haven't had any problems driving any of my poweramps with any of my pedal style preamps, even the EBS Microbass powered by phantom gets plenty loud

The XT1i is on sale at Musician's Friend, but if the XLS is around the same price, I'll consider it too.
