Preamp to CA-9 cable, XLR or 1/4"?

Sign in to disble this ad
So for a while I have been using a Balanced 1/4" to XLR cable to go from my SVP-Pro preamp out (1/4") to a CA-9 (XLR).

Is there any advantage to using this cable over a 1/4" to 1/4"?
I have read that xlr is quieter, not sure if this is true or not.

Also Im guessing the input on the ca9 is balanced and the preamp out is unbalanced, so Im not sure if having a balanced cable is of any advantage here.

Im getting ready to switch to a different preamp and just want to know which cable is the norm for such a conneciton.

Thanks

IME, line-outs are normally 1/4" and DI outs are XLR.

I use a 1/4 inch from an ART pre to the CA-6 in my rack rig. Works fine.

For short lengths an unbalanced cable will work fine. You may well have to turn up to compensate for signal loss with such a cable. You could also convert the unbalanced output of the pre to balanced by using a transformer coupled hum eliminator such as the ART DTI.

I'm using 1/4" balanced cable between my SVP-CL & SVP-Pro into a CA-4. Whether I need to or not is a different story.

I believe the manual to the CA series amps says to use TRS or XLR cable, so balanced is what I'm using.
