preamp out (only), from solid-state integrated?

i searched and found this

Markbass LM II as preamp with no speaker load

i wanted to use my epifani ps1000 as a preamp only. there is a preamp-out, which i used as input to the effects return of the fender integrated amp i wanted to use. i turned the epi's master all the way down, and powered up. no speaker connected to the epi (which sounded ok from the post above). >> i got no sound (other than some weird am-radio-like noises). if i turned up the master on the epi, i got sound through the second amp. i didn't like this, so i immediately turned off the epi, and some loud crazy sounds came out of the second amp as the epi powered down (yeah - should have powered the secondary amp down first).

i have a separate DI out (xlr cable type). but at this point, i'm concerned about using this amp without a load. thoughts?

your epi is probably set up to run the line out post master volume that's all. What you heard when you turned off the eip was turn off transients - some hi fi amp makers don't filter these out as they think id degrades the sound.

the epi is solid state poweramp so you don't need a load. you can call epifani to confirm that the line out is effected by the master volume, weird, but i've seen it happen. the master isnt a poweramp volume knob, it just effects how much signal gets to the poweramp.

thanks... i just plugged in again, and i'm getting those crazy am-radio sounds. they are active too... like sine waves in motion with static. i'm going preamp out of the epi to the effects return of a late fender bassman combo. i guess it could be either amp - i'll have to test.

i need a separate cable before i can test it from the DO - that will take a few days.

DO works fine (dead quiet) into powered qsc speaker using xlr connects. DO is still post-master (even with an output dial for the DO on the back).

i'm guessing the noises had to do with the fender bassman.
