just my 2cents from not very much bass playing but something ive been happy with that is not overly common or sansamp... is an art prochannel tube preamp it has a ton of gain to drive a poweramp... good compression and lots of eq... i run a sansamp bass di infront of it and a crown 402 after into new acoustic 4x10s not premo by anymeans but been happy with the art... and they are cheap now... also provide phantom power for your sansamp if you have one of those floor unit deals
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com...ELAID=26019071

seems to make a nice inbetween to boost mids and really tweek eq between sansamp and poweramp
Maximum Output Level: +27dBu (XLR), +22dBu (1/4")
27db output will make your poweramp love you... least works well with mine

another thing i like about this for bass is it has a "lowcut" knob so you can chop off the very low freqs if your playing high vol thru 10s.... also changing the tube is a simple character mod a person could do...
one last thing that i like about it is (mabey for the worse) but the EQ is crazy detailed.... each knob has a multiplier button and a wide/narrow button
way i set mine was to flat out all settings on the ART... (tap the bypass to check if really flat) then set up sansamp best you can.... then you can pull the blanket off the amp with the ART eq section... tap the bypass again and the sansamp sounds (a bit weak by comparison)..... and the xlr phantom/signal line makes for a neat set up.... from sansamp... only one cord and no battery to worry about
here is a link to a very close up that you can zoom to see layout of eq and such
http://cachepe.samedaymusic.com/medi...19bcc18f25.jpg

hear it also doubles as a mic pre amp

VTBP-201S Tube Bass Preamplifier, for me it's the gold standard of preamps. I had an earlier one and in a moment of madness sold it and tried a few other things. Finally went back to it and glad I did. There have been some in the classifieds for a good price of late.

If your looking for something that is more extreme flexibility wise the Markbass stuff I have played true had sounded surprisingly good. I think they make a pre.
