i removed the sound clips since there wasn't much response to them. no sense on wasting my bandwidth.

Lightbulb Well OK!

I like the second the best as it sounds a little less scooped in the mid
range and clearer in the low end.
Cant guess what it is though?.
Perhaps a 4003 ricky?.

you picked the same preamp that i prefer on those clips.
pretty good guess on the bass too, as it does sound kinda like a ricky-but its not.
(here's a clue- Glenn Cornick occasionally used one, and i do believe it its what he used on the original 'Bouree' track).

hmmm. the differences there seem subtle to me.

I don't know who Glenn Cornick is but is that an old hollow-body Gibson ?

Glenn Cornick was the bass player in Jethro Tull.
its not a hollow body, but that was a good guess.

you can guess as many times as you'd like.
nope. its not a 50's p bass.
(clue: its not a Fender)

i guess that no one else wants to try and identify what type of bass it is.
but the two preamps are a UA 6176 and Focusrite ISA 430 MKII (but not necessarily in that order).

every time i saw him play with JT, he used a right handed fender p bass with a left handed maple tele bass neck on it (thru Wem amps). but yes, the bass my two clips is:

a 1968 Gibson EB3.

later this afternoon, i was doing some more experimenting with the ISA430MKII . i ran my bass into a Radial J48 direct box, and into the ISA's mic pre (powering it with the +48 phantom switch) instead of the front panel instrument jack.

the ISA has four different mic 'impedance loadings' to choose from, as well as an 'air' button that opens up the high end a bit more. the second to the lowest impedance setting is the ISA 110 setting, so you have 1 lower one and two higher ones, all effecting the instrument's 'voice' . pressing 'impedance' steps through each of the four transformer pre-amp input impedance values, as indicated by their corresponding LEDs. by selecting different values for the impedance of its transformer input, the performance of both the ISA 430 MKII preamp and the microphone/direct box can be tailored to set the desired level and frequency response.

this really opens up a whole new world of slightly different colors as a bass preamp. i was able to get a more 'open' and transparent sound as opposed to using the inst. jack, which is more discrete solid state sounding (but still awesome). i was even able to dial in some 'tube sounding' grit if i wanted it. at one setting, i had it sounding like my '69 SVT.

the 'vintage' compressor and limiter settings also allow you to get some vintage grind in that stage too. there's also a 'balance' knob, where you can blend the compressed signal with the uncompressed one, and that's the way that i've been using it lately, since it still retains all of the punch and attack of the orginal uncompressed sound, but also adds a bit of sustain and fullness to the slightly dead spots on my fender basses.

so, IMO, this is really a 'deep' unit that has alot of ways to dial in a really big & fat bass tone, and i'm just starting to appreciate what it can do.

dang it! I guess I associate the Gibson sound with "hollow body".

BTW, i'm only taking the Focusrite ISA430MKII to the gig tonight, so no A/B'ing preamps on the gig this time (its going to be a long night and it makes for an easier teardown). it'll be the first time i've used it live with my 12126 'vox' cab, which has a bit more growl than my accugroove EW jr.

another cool feature on it is the filter section. it has adjustable hi and low pass filters (w/an 18db rolloff). i only use the high pass, and set it at 20 HZ, since i do like low end, but nothing at or below 20Hz.
