preamp tubes!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey,

I am currently using a Marshall jcm 800 bass with 3 unknown preamp tubes.
I was wondering what would happen if i stick 3 high gain 12ax7 tubes (tung sols?) In it? Or do i need to switch the 4 power tubes too?
Does it really change the tone? Or just slightly noticable?
Would i get a more distorted and punchy output? Since the amp does not have a gain knob.
And finally, what tubes would u guys recommend? I use a 212 cab with a mm stingray and play metal/hard rock.

Thanks guys!

it will change but slightly noticeable. Try it, it doesn't hurt to know how much it will change the tone of your amp.
