preamps like the ampeg svp-bsp

Sign in to disble this ad
anyone know of any other preamps like the ampeg svp-bsp (Billy Sheehan preamp) that has the blendable overdrive channel? i have fears of mine dying and want to look for other options. please dont suggest the pearce preamp that the ampeg is based on, i would love one, but chances of finding one are pretty slim!

You can do that with the Sansamp RPM or RBI - crank up the gain and then use the blend knob to mix in the amount of clean direct signal. I found the RPM to sound much better than the BSP FWIW.

I have to agree. I've owned both the SVP-CL and SVP-Pro and have always gone back to the SansAmp RPM. Sorry, I can't speak with any authority on the BSP as I've only had limited exposure. I also have an early pre-PSA SansAmp which allows you to dial in the desired OD on the low, mid, or treble bands.

RPM or RBI? RPM has a lot more gain on tap.

Are you looking for tube OD or straight up distortion? The svt pro has a drive control for some OD. As said above the sansamp lines have a lot of fans also. If you like your current amp, it dosent take much to keep them going , especially pre's.

If it dies and you want to ditch it, look me up.

rbi, ive never tried the rpm. i guess my main thing about the sansamps though is that the eq covers both sides of the sound. the ampeg has separate eq on both channels. i might have to check out the rpm though. thanks

you're probably right, just my paranoia likes to go for the worst possible outcome! im not even sure at this point yet if it is the preamp that gave me the problem. been rearranging and cutting out some gear this week to try to isolate the issue but havent been able to play at full volume till rehearsal this weekend. my rig isnt exactly neighborhood friendly

I don't think that rack pre's sell that well outside of TB. They might be hard to find but not impossible. Be a little patient and keep checking the classifieds here.

Our own JGR developed a preamp just like the one you describe. JGR's custom built rock bass tube preamp is done!

I don't get it. You like your SVP, so keep it. If it's acting up, it would cost less to have it repaired than buying something else.

SVP-BSP: I owned one myself and other than buying another SVP-BSP, you could buy an SVT 5 PRO. The 5 PRO is basically the SVP-BSP paired with a power section.

I do not know of anything out there that really sounds like it. You could also go the route of a distortion pedal and a blend pedal. Not the best ideas, but at least you have a few options.

i dont want to get rid of it. like i mentioned a few posts earlier i just get paranoid about the worst case scenario happening. just looking for options if that were to happen.
