PreSonus preamp into Carvin B1500?

Sign in to disble this ad
How do you best connect a PreSonus Studio Channel preamp to a Carvin B1500 amp? The choices seem to be the effects return or the instrument in jack. Do you put the jack in half-way because it is balanced? Help!

Why would you do that instead of just using a power amp?

bklee, are you planning to use the Presonus as your preamp and use the Carvin only as a power amp (bypassing its preamp stage)? If this is the case your only choice is to use the effects return jack on the back. If you're going to also use the preamp section of the Carvin (essentially daisy chaining after the Presonus preamp) then you obviously must use the front input jack.

In either case, you'll be going from the balanced jack on the Presonus to an unbalanced jack on the Carvin (as you've already figured out) but you should be able to simply use either a TS or TRS instrument cable and it will function (as an unbalanced line).

You might consider the option of using the Presonus in the Carvin effects loop, instead. This will put the Carvin preamp first, followed by the Presonus preamp and finally the Carvin power section. I do this with my rig: 1) Mesa preamp section 2) Presonus Blue Tube pre 3) Mesa power amp section

Experiment and find what sounds best. The Studio Channel (I have one) is a potent tone-shaping tool capable of accepting either instrument or line level signals. I run mine directly into my power amp with no other preamp or interface in the chain.

Thank you all for responding to my question. All the amps I have have (B1500, Fender B300, Peavey Vintage) all have preamp sections. The one I use most, the B1500, seems to have less tone shaping ability than I would like, but has lots of power. I am thinking of getting a power amp (per rpsands suggestion) if the Studio Channel works well. Does anyone have a suggestion? Our band does everything from small clubs/coffeehouse to gymnasium-sized rooms to outside. I like to use the Fender B300 with an Ampeg 810E for the larger venues, but it's so heavy; it would be great to use a lighter head with the Carvin BRX410 neo.

The cheapest (and most obvious) solution would be to bypass the B1500's pre by using the FX return. If you have some extra pocket change, you may want to try the DriveCore (Crown?) or any of the newer-generation lightweight stuff. I've had some experience with QSC PLX gear but that's about it.

Is the Crown a power amp that is typically used in PA applications? Carvin makes one of those that I can probably get very reasonably from a friend of mine.

Great..."Used" is my favorite brand! The Carvin will be fine. JOOC, what model are you considering?

The amp is either a DCM2000L or a DCM3800L and my friend bought 2 of them in a buying frenzy a couple of years ago. He has never needed more than one. It sounds like it would have loads of headroom and combined with the PreSonus it would be a viable bass rig.

Ask for right-of-refusal and give it a go with just the Studio Channel. You'll know in a couple of minutes whether it's right for you.

The Studio Channel is an excellent tone shaping tool. Just don't match it with the Crown Drivercore. It won't get very loud due to Crown having 1.4v input sensitivity. The Presonus puts out 1.0v. The Peavey IPR series have a sensitivity of .775 v. That's what I'm going to get for the Presonus. It should crank.
