Problem in amplifier sound, please suggest anyone

Hi,

I have an Ibanez SR300 bass guitar, i play it on an Ahuja PSX 1200 ampli speaker, it is a 100 watt (rms) amplifier.
The guitar was sounding good till now, however, recently there is a distortion sound (like the speaker diaphram will burst), whwen ever i increase the volume above a quarter. On E string, this usually happens, the sound loses its tone and gets distorted even on playing a note, however, when i reduce the volume, it starts sounding right.
Please suggest what could be wrong? Is it with the amplifier or with the guitar......how do i correct it?

I don't know anything about it too, but it never hurts to check:

- all the input jacks are clear, make sure that they are not shorted
- the 12" driver mounted tight to the baffle
- wiring inside the cabinet (is any of them touching the speaker cone, etc?)
- any blown fuses?
- signs of speaker damage

Check to see if your SR300 has a battery box. If so - when's the last time you changed it? (The battery, not the box.)
