Question Problem with my Ampeg SVT810E

Sign in to disble this ad
I play through an Ampeg SVT-3 pro on my SVT810E. At some point on tour, the bottom four speakers on my cab stopped working and the top four just don't sound very good at all. There is no real round low end to it..just a flat poopey sound :P My cab has just been like this for a while now and im so fed up with it. i want to get this puppy fixed up asap!

Anyways, i was wondering if anyone could help me out..how would i go about checking the wiring for the speakers? What all could be going wrong?

Thanks

first try a different head/instrument/cable that you know works....always check the easy stuff first to narrow down the variables

If there's one input jack the head/instrument/cable is not the issue, based on your symptoms.

You need to open that cab up. Something's lose in there, and it's probably a simple fix.

check the middle 4 speakers. They should all be connected in parallel, so most likely scenario is that the connection between the last speaker in the top half came undone from the first speaker in the bottom half. I believe the newer cabs have a single jack for all 8 or two separate jacks for top/bottom, but I'm not really sure how that changes the wiring.

Either way, pull a speaker or two and look for loose connections. Might also want to pull the jackplate and make sure everything is still wired up on there.

pretty much what I was thinking. This would throw off the impedence that the head sees as well.

It would but seeing as he's using a 3 pro it will be ok electronically. Sonically though, it may be thin and weak sounding to your ears because the now double-impedance changes the output of the head and you're probably cranking the volume (and/or gain) to get the same sound level which in turn is impacting the overall tone of your amp.

I tried to open it up...took off the back plate where the inputs are...couldn't get to anything there..all there was was the small circuit plate..that looked all connected well. I also tried to take out a speaker and couldn't seem to do so..I know it may sound a bit dumb but i couldn't figure out how to actually take the speaker out of the hole..all the screws were out and it seemed stuck. There wasn't a spot to grip it either because it seemed like there was a plastic rising around the speaker. I couldn't push the speaker from behind because that circuit plate was blocking my path and i couldn't move it. :/ What can i do?

what i usually do is take a flathead screwdriver and gently pry it off. the rubber behind the speaker frame gets stuck after a while. i just stick a screwdriver into the screw holes and gently pry. sometimes i might have to stick the screwdriver between the rubber and the wood, but i try to avoid that when possible so it doesn't scratch it up.

Awesome..i finally got it opened up and it was such a simple fix! All i had to do was re-connect one of the wires that were going to the top left speaker of the bottom 4. So stoked! my amp sounds amazing now.
