Promethean P5110

I played one of these about two years ago and liked it a lot. I played one on Tuesday and I think it is perfect for me. It is light, loud, and modern sounding. For some like me who only plays out a little and is slap happy, this thing is perfect!

The Promethean 5110 and my Yamaha Trb5II are a match made in heaven.

I know the Prometheans have been out for about two years. Does anybody have new takes on this combo?

I have been wanting to check one out for some time. It looks pretty incredible for its size.

i'm also very interested in this combo. unfortunately, they're not stocked in the "big box" music stores in my area so i can't judge the sound in person. i have a genz benz 10" shuttle box and i'm very curious how it compares with the promethean.

keep us posted.

The Promethean beats everything, even a Markbass 1x12 when it comes to compactness. The B string response is just great. The amp gets a killer modern sound, but the Vibe control can allow it to get very traditional too. The Genz Benz is very similar, but the Promethean is a better dollar for dollar deal.

I liked it but it didn't work out for me. I can see someone using it mostly at home that likes to slap really digging it. I felt like to play with a band it definitely needed an extension cab. I wanted a small combo that could handle rehearsal and small gigs alone. Ended up with a shuttle 9 and 12/6 LDS.

Wednesday a drummer friend came over and we played for a couple of hours. I wanted to see how it might perform with a band so we played some mp3s thru the PA and played along.

The tone is excellent. Compared to the EA micro/wizzy 10 it seemed a little fuller. I think someone else described it as more colored in a good way and I would agree. While the wizzy was very clean, the Ibanez is sparkly. It played at a respectable volume by itself, but not really enough to play with the drummer and PA music. With a 112 extension cab it sounded very full and vibrated everything in the room.

I'm not a big slapper but it has a great slap tone and handled it well. The vibe didn't really do anything for me, just made the tone dull. With the vibe off I found it more useful to use the graphic EQ and toggle on and off for different tones.

Wide open, the wizzy would not fart. This unit will fart with the the gain blinking, EQ flat and the master at about 11 o'clock. But it's very loud when that happens. This probably has to do with the pots EA uses but also I think the wizzy 10 is a better speaker.

The bad news: Tonight, while playing at a low volume (master at 8 o'clock, bass less than half), the amp quit. It was powered but no sound. I turned it off and turned in on later and it worked, so I figured it was thermal protection.

Then it quit again at even lower volume (kids in bed volume). Now it won't make any sound. I plugged the bass in my old amp and it's fine. It won't play thru the ext. cab either. Tried different bass and cord. With my active bass I could see the gain light blinking but no sound.

Looks like this one's going back under the 45 day return policy. The search continues...

It sounds like you got a lemon. Since I plan to get one, I hope that is not an issue for me.
