Proper location? To replace or recone?

Could any TB members share their experiences with re-coned speakers? Orange County Speakers swears that a re-coned speaker is just as good if not better than new. Money is not an issue as the price for new is 169.00 as compared to 85.00 re-coned. Any war stories?

They are if the parts used are original. If the drivers are fairly recent from a major manufacturer like Eminence that's usually the case. Don't count on it with 1969 CTS drivers for an SVT.

Thanks Bill !

Greetings Bill, some how You always manage to be there for us. It's an Eden speaker, but the speaker cone seems to be intact. Is it possible to replace the internals without touching the cone itself? Is that repair still considered a re-cone?

A recone replaces everything, the cone, surround, dome, spider and voice coil. If any of the parts aren't exactly the same as the original it won't sound the same. You can't replace anything except the dome without replacing everything.

I had these folks recone a couple PAS 10s from an SWR cabinet. Worked out well...

A re-coned speaker is as good as a new speaker if the re-cone job is done properly. A re-coned speaker would need to be broken in like a new one, too.

Agreed on all counts.

The quality of the guy doing the job is as, if not more important than the recone kit. Orange County has a good reputation. I would use them if they were local to me.

Hi.

Yet another vote for: "If it's done properly, it's at least as good as the new one".

Count Yourselves lucky to have re-coning services near you, at least over here we don't quite have that luxury.

Regards
Sam

Many Thanks!

Thanks bass brothers for much needed schooling. I believe this is a job for Orange County Speaker repair.

Anyone know a reputable place in MA or NH for getting speakers re-coned? I have two Eminence BAS12-2508 speakers that are in need of repair.

Thanks in advance

How about 1973 CTS drivers for an SVT? Gotta admit my recones sound ultra-fabulous and very much like my original 73 cab with CTS's that got burned up in a bar fire.

Speaking of which, does any of you remember the thread where we have some sort of a directory for re- cone service? I can't seems to find that thread anymore.

I am in Toronto and want to re-cone a speaker. Any suggestion?
I have no idea where to begin the search of such a shop. Do I go to talk to those hifi place or what?

Re-coning only seems to make economical sense if done locally. With shipping, there isn't much saving compare to a new speaker.

Ya, our local reconers jacked up their prices to what OC Speaker charges + shipping and made the decision slightly easier for me next time I need reconing
