Punk/Alt. Rock tone out of my Hartke?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, hate me if you will. But I'm having trouble with this.

Ever since I sold my GK setup, I've been searching for a tone similar. I would go back to GK, but I don't have that cash atm

Anyway, the head is a Hartke 2000 out of a 2115 combo. That speaker blew so I picked up an Eden D115T (don't like the thing) and a SWR Workingman's 8x10 ($200 in mint condition!). Anyway, I play through a SX Ursa P-bass with Bassline p-ups in it. I've messed with the tone a lot and can get some decent sounding stuff... but it just doesn't sit right. It cuts through fine, but it sounds empty. I'm only playing at a volume of 1-3, but still... I would like to achieve a better tone.

So, any suggestions on settings? I want a tone such as Brand New or Minus the Bear.

This is a picture of what I have access to on the amp

Fill this out if that helps?

Boost your 30hz half way up the slider, 125hz quarter of the way, and 250hz a third of the way. Cut your 2khz a third and your 3khz a quarter. Raise your low contour 3db. I would use this as a baseline. Add some 64hz for more "woof", 500hz for more of a woody boxy tone, and add back in the 2khz for zing and clack. This would be my recommendation for the 8x10.

Put all your sliders in the middle and move each one up and down and listen to what happens closely. You'll find some of the sliders will add more of what you're looking for and take away things you don't like. Also, if you have a manual for it or can find one online, it's possible they might have some sample settings for you to try out.

I'll try this next time I have access to my rig! Thanks for the snappy response.

I'll have to look for an online manual, I bought this used from GC and they didn't have one. Oddly, I did that when it was still the combo but not with my 8x10. Don't know why, maybe because I was discouraged. I'll see how I like winegamd's advice, and then maybe integrate the two.

Thanks.
