Question Putting together my first rig! LM800 + ???

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Everyone!

I've been lurking on these boards for a while trying to research the best options for a bass rig I'm putting together. I live in the New York Cit, so portability is key, but the band I play in is a hard rock band so I need a big sound.

I've fallen in love with the sound (and power) of the Little Mark 800, and I'm looking for a 4x10 to finish off my purchase.

Since the LM800 was plugged into a Markbass 410HF at Guitar Center, I know I'm happy with that sound. And the weight is right. But it's getting a bit pricey for my broke a$$, so I've been giving myself a headache researching alternatives.

I'm looking at this bad boy (Buy Gallien-Krueger 410MBE 800W 4x10 Ultralight Bass Speaker Cabinet with Horn | Amp Cabinets | Musician's Friend) now and wanted to hear the thoughts of anyone who'd be inclined to help a n00b out.

It seems remarkably light, affordable, and can match the amp in power. Almost too good to be true.

Any thoughts on the two pieces as a pairing? It'd be beyond greatly appreciated. This amp stuff is scary! (And the peeps at Guitar Center are either stoned, stupid, or stuck up and unwilling to help. Or a combination of the three.)

The only way to know for sure if it'll sound like you want it to, is to play through it. Unfortunately, it's far too subjective to make any blanket statements, as we all hear differently, and have different tonal goals. Also, doesn't really matter with reguards to wattage ratings on the cab- it only tells you at what point the voice coils will melt, nothing more. Don't be overly concerned with "matching" the wattage. Good luck.

Thanks RickenBoogie!

I plan to head to Guitar Center today to play around with the two as a pair, but I like to do some research before hand whenever possible, since I've had nothing but bad experiences with the floor staff at GC.

When you say that I shouldn't concern myself about matching wattage, what do you mean? If I'm pushing an 800 watt amp at four ohms through an 800 watt cabinet, doesn't that mean I should get the volume that I need? Or am I waaaay off base? Sorry for the idiotic question, I do try and read through as many threads and FAQs as I can, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit confused.

Also, if anyone else has recommendations for a powerful 4x10 that they've hooked a LM800 to, it would be super helpful. Thanks!!

As said by RickenBoogie, it's all very subjective - one person's heaven is another's hell - so you'll be the best judge of what sounds best for you.

My only other thoughts are: it sounds like your choice may be limited to what GC has available, is that a good thing?; you get what you pay for; and if it seems too good to be true, it usually is.

EDIT: I should add that I had the LMT800 for awhile and liked it. I think you're off to a good start there.
