Q: Peavey 6-10 guitar cab -> bass cab

Sign in to disble this ad
Greets all. Recently I picked up a Peavey 6-10's guitar cabinet in fair condition. The drivers were on their last legs, some with cone rips.

So I pulled all the drivers out with the idea I'd find some decent 10's to load up the cab with. What's the thought on a good 10" for multi-driver cabs?

But, the strange thing about this cab is the top chamber for the left & right 10's are sealed, but the bottom 4 10's are vented at the bottom of the cab. That is, the 2nd and 3rd left side drivers are vented at the bottom, isolated from the 2nd and 3rd right side drivers (also vented at the bottom).

One wonders if closing up the vents on the lower 2 pairs of 10's would make it more SVT-ish...

Thanks!

I think real well of Eminence speakers. I would also leave the vents as they are. Bass moves a lot of air, and you need the vents to allow the speakers to move.

A cab designed for guitar simply won't work well for bass, no matter what drivers you use.

+1 to that. It's likely got insufficient space inside for a bass cab. There are differences besides just the drivers.

a guitar cab with vents? unusual. if you were going to use a sub it would work for a mid-high cab if it has small internal volume. whats the model number ?

As I tried to describe, the top 2 10's aren't vented. The bottom 4 10's are.

As it happens, a pic of the cab is found here on TB:
Peavey 610TVX?

Wouldn't installing bass drivers would be a viable possibility since this cab is about the same overall size as current, bona fide 6x10" bass cabs by other manufacturers?

Thx.

The Eminence to which I was referring are bass drivers. With the bottom 4 being vented, you may not need the top two to be vented. It depends on whether (and where it's set) there is a crossover. You may be okay with this cab, but I'd double-check everything before putting money into it. If the internal volume is the same as a genuine bass cab, and it's ported correctly, and if the crossover is right, and if... then you'll be fine by adding some good bass drivers. If any of those things is different, you'll probably still be happy with the cab, although gear snobs and audiophiles will tell you it sounds bad.

I put bass speakers in a custom built 4x12 "guitar" cab. I measured the cab before I bought it and it's larger than a traditional 4x12 cab, and almost as deep as the peavey bass TVX412. I bought it and it's awesome. Sure the speakers don't match the cab, but it's close enough that it sounds good.

Thanks, RMR, I kinda had that idea that - size depending - bass drivers may well work in a cab designed for guitar.

Replace the speakers with similar guitar speakers!
