Preamps are all about tone & features.

What tone are you after (or range of tones) and what features are important to you?

Whether you use an active or passive bass guitar can impact your decision as well.

I love active basses because I can set my preamp EQ to where I get a good basic all-around tone and then fine tune for the acoustics of the venue and the requirements of a given song from my bass guitar instead of jacking with my amp behind me.

Yeah, that's a totally subjective question. It's the same as picking a bass head. Just pure, personal preference.

I only use 1u preamps generally because I like to have the extra space, and tend to like simple ones with hot outputs

Doesn't matter because you'll buy one, sell / trade it off, then wish you hadn't.

What's your budget? FWIW, get something with at least a single parametric EQ band....its edumacational.

Actually the one thing I like is versatility and switch ability...so I'm looking at the Mo Bass end of things...

Strangely it seems that bass pre-amps rarely have any on the fly switching, they all seem aimed toward the set-and forget player...

I've also used quite a few, but I keep on coming back to my old favorite, the BBE 383 bass preamp. Why? Mainly because it has enough balls to drive any power amp I've tried, ability to bi-amp, active crossover, compressor, one space rackable, BBE process function, and great eq. And , you can usually find them on Ebay for around $100.
