QS 610 hacked into 410...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone i am new to these forums. Came here looking for some insight.

A few days ago i went to guitar center and bought a used hughes and kettner quantum qs 600 with the matching qs 410s for $900. Brought the thing home and plugged it in and it sounded great!! I thought i got a really good deal until i started actually looking at the cab. I guess the guy that owned this before me actually had a QS 610 and decided to cut off 210s!!!

I should have realized it at the store when i looked right under the speakons and it says qs 610 lol. i was just so excited i didnt think about it.

Guess my first question is should i keep it? I think it sounds amazing and i have yet to find a similar sounding amp. i was originally going to get a GK 1001rbii or a ampeg svt-700. when i saw a head AND a cab for around the same price i couldnt pass it up, especially with the reputation hughes and kettner has.

Now if i do keep it should i be mad at GC for not even telling me about it? I do know the guys at my local GC pretty well and dont think they tried to screw me over. The guy that owned it first did a pretty decent job at chopping off the speakers. hard to even tell at first glance.

One of the biggest issues im having is figuring out what Ohms i should have it set at on my head.
the QT 600 putts out 600w at 8, 5.3, 4, and 2.8 ohms the QS 610 cab does 1350w at 5.3 ohms...thats with 6 10s though not 4... i know the ACTUAL qs 410 does 900w at 8 ohms. should i just set it at 8 ohms?

If you like the sound of the cab, keep it.

Also there is a test you can do to find out the ohms of the cab, not too sure how to do it but I'm sure someone on here could tell you.

Yea I wouldn't keep it either. There's probably a reason why the previous owner got rid of it.

I agree with Jimmy. Forum folks get GAS pains all the time. If you ever decided that you just had to have something listed in the classifieds, and decided to trade or sell your cab, you have to disclose what you found.

Since you created this thread, there is now a searchable audit trail that could come back to haunt you if you didn't. I always search for posts of sellers when I am interested in what they are selling, just to make sure the hadn't complained about their item earlier. You'd be surprised how many folks don't think about that when they list.

I'd take it back. Hard to sell a hacked up cab, without giving it away. Anytime someone takes a saw to a factory built cab it becomes "mystery cab". Adding dampening material, or upgrading the drivers is a different story. Not many folks are into buying "mystery cabs", as they dont know what the hell they are.

Go back to GC, show them what you found. Tell them you are willing to keep it but at a deeply discounted price. If they dont knock 40-50% off the price then return it.

unless the previous owner changed the speakers the 3 and 6 speaker cabinet designs usually have speakers with an odd impedance (like 6 or 12 ohms each) so when used in combination add up to something common like 4 or 8 ohms total. If this cab has the original speakers it will have an odd total impedance when used in configurations of 4 speakers (usually 3 or 6 ohms total) CHECK THE SPEAKERS or otherwise verify the total cab impedance or you might be sorry...

If this cab has the original speakers then the total impedance is NOT the same as the 6-10 was before being chopped

Think im leaning more towards returning it, unless they give me like half my money back.

Now i know not many people have gotten a chance to hear a QT600 but im trying to find a head that sounds similar. Going in to GC today to try out a GK fusion 550 with a GK neo 115. any other recommendations. i know the " which amp to get" threads arent that popular( been lurking around these forums for a while now. This is the first time i had a good question to post lol.) But ive never found anything like the QT600 and id lovvve to find something similar.

Why can't you just return the cab? Tell them what the guy did to it and say you want x amount back for the cab but keep the head.

So that brings up another question, how much is the head worth by itself( new and used). theres almost nothing online about it. Only one listing on ebay for it at $1800...which i think is a little high

I would say take it back to GC as well.
They probably sold it to you as a 610 not a 410. And if they are like the GC's around here, the only real gear knowledge they have comes off of Evil bay.

LOL yea pretty much. Once you guys brought up the resale value i really started second guessing it. It sounds AMZAING but i do get GAS every so often so i wanna keep options open just in case.

See if they'll give you 18 months of 100 % back as trade when you want something else that's on sale. That would be the only killer deal I'd be into.
