Same as above. Also, Mike Inez has a huge pedalboard. Maybe he's using a Sansamp BDDI with blended overdrive?

You guys both have experience with Sansamp stuff, whatdya think?

That recipe up top is pretty much Mindcrime-era Queensryche.

Right, but the "recent" sound of the live video was sadly absent from their classic studio sound (= blah, imo). Similar deal with AIC.

Yep, def ok-ish GK sound, a bit dated & synthy too, rather than growly, modern, and mean...

...don't forget the pick. Some EMG's might help.

Gonna need a heavy pick... emgs and a Sansamp should get you real close

I saw footage of a recent AIC concert. He was using a spector. And those more than likely had EMGs in them. EMGs have a pretty unique sound.

Spector + ampeg svt (2, 2 pre, or 7 pro) + svt8x10. Gets that tone all day , no effects.

He's running a distortion (bddi?) On a wick for AIC. The Spector does that naturally.

Mike Inez plays a Warwick SS1 with a pick into a pair of SVT-II Pro's feeding a pair of Ampeg 8X10's.

As mentioned above, he also uses Spector. His SS1 has EMG PJ's with a P reversed and an EMG preamp. The NS2 and SS1 are fairly similar construction and wood wise.

No clue about his pedalboard.

My newer bass is a nice custom bolt-on 4-string that has EMG P/J pickups with a bass/treble preamp. It's not a hefty beast, but it has a mahogany body and maple/rosewood neck. It could get me a whole lot closer to that sound than my passive J-bass for sure.

Careful with the BDDI. While it can get up toward an overdriven sound, it can also bury a lot of mids that might be not so helpful with trying to bring out that big diesel tone.

Yep, sounds like EMGs, pick and Ampeg turned up with the mids high.

Here's a new/working link for the AIC Sonisphere fest:

Anyone got info on Inez's pedalboard yet?

As Grendle stated, Spector + overdriven Ampeg or GK = the Queensryche & AIC sound.

I'll add that having low action & a touch of fret buzz is also important, and so is using a strong right hand picking or fingerstyle attack, and fresh nickle or steel roundwound strings.
IMHO, the # 1 ingredient is active P/J EMG pickups & fresh strings.

+1. spector pretty much solves that whole riddle of where the growl and grit are coming from

Then how does one explain the HUGE pedalboard (see vid)?

I have a USA Peavey Millennium with active Music Man/J-Bass pups that sound better than any EMG's I've played. Then I bought a Sansamp bddi too but it doesn't get enough gain and and the gain farts-out w/o a huge bass cut first.
So I'm running two paths made easy with a Boss LS-2:
1) EHX steel leather into Zoom Sansamp sim with tons of processing
2) Tech 21 Blonde into Behringer blendable bass o.d. (Boss ODB-3 clone)
That's 3 levels of freq-dependent grind and it kills. No single ch. of gain is gonna get that sound.

Spector NS2/NS4 is the sound, they have that awesome grind tone. Amp is really unimportant.

Agreed. Spector is the key ingredient. Pick not necessary.
