Cool QUESTION ABOUT PHIL JONES AMPS

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello guys! I was thinking that since Phil Jones advertises his amps with "powerful, clean, uncolored sound", do they sound good with double bass/acoustic bass guitar? Thanks for the answers!

No direct experience, but I have a friend that owns a PJB briefcase, uses it for both DB and EBG. He loves it and states that it is, as the add says, "powerful, clean, uncolored sound".

I've listened to Phil play his upright through the Flightcase, Superflightcase as well as the D200 with the 6B cabinet. They all sounded awesome.

I have never used with an acoustic bass but with the double I was more than happy. If I had the choice to live on an island with only one rig, it would be a Phil Jones. They're on the pricey side but worth it in my opinion.

Cool! Thanks for the answers! I was still thinking 'bout the Briefcase, if anyone has tried DB/ABG with it??

Ed Friedland does some nice demos that are on youtube where he plays upright and BG through some phil jones stuff. Of course that dude makes everything sound great, but it'll give you an idea of the clarity.

I always use my Briefcase with my double bass, those two just go hand in hand!

Absolutely! I really like his amps/cabs/combos for electric bass, acoustic bass guitar, and double bass. Chris Fitzgerald reviewed the Flightcase BG-150 and the Super Flightcase BG-300 in issue #4, with a focus on upright amplification.

Have you tried the Briefcase with an electric bass? How did you like it?

I recently got my mind blown by playing a Jazz thru a Briefcase. BIG sound. Little package.

I have had my Briefcase for a long time. It does sound good with electric bass, but it's not exceptionally loud. It is heavy, though, especially if you add in the optional battery (which I did).

If I were buying new, though, and I did not need the batter-powered option, I think I'd opt for the Flightcase BG-150 over the Briefcase (especially when you factor in the option of putting a PB-300 underneath the BG-150).

Tom.

Interesting. I've found these to be not even decent at 'whisper' practice level. In A/Bing to, for example, a Genz Shuttle 3/1 x 8" loaded cab, not even close. Also, the two I've played were very noisy, and heavy for what they do.

That being said, the FliteCase was VERY nice sounding (double the drivers), not any heavier (neo) and not much larger than the Briefcase, and sounded much better (closer in output to single 110 cab, which allows for low volume, small gig work).

IMO and IME.

That's why my mind was blown. I played one a few years back and was unimpressed. Figured, why not, it's been some time...couldn't believe my ears.

It sounds really clear & crisp through it, but just a tiny bit too hifi for my taste. With acoustic bassguitar, it is just as nice as with an upright (good for piezo's). But for electric basses, I prefer the GK MicroBass because it has more natural mids (without EQ-ing) & that is the reason why I don't like the MB with acoustic basses so much... The Briefcase for Acoustics, the MicroBass for Electrics I say!

I don't get the HiFi reference refering to PJB gear, unless it's refering to their clarity. With a little tweaking on the EQ/Tone controls I can get about any sound I desire from my PJB rigs. They certainly seem to be the best at getting your bass out into the audience, without seeming exceediingly loud on stage. To me a HiFi sounding amp is one that doesn't respond to you altering your style, playing harder to get more of a growl for instance, and my PJB rigs respond nicely to this.

I love the Super Flightcase combo, and it's about all I use any more. For soundclips, all of the "Nachbar" clips on my site were recroded with the Flightcase except "Love For Sale". I no longer play BG on gigs, but the few times I've plugged a BG into this amp, it's always sounded great. For me, it's the ultimate doubling amp.
