Question about power...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all,

I am a guitar player who is attempting to broaden my horizons by picking up the bass. I have a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz that suits my blues, jazz, and Americana rock needs well and now I'm looking to put together a small bass rig for practice and recording. (No stadiums or arenas for me)

With that said, I am thinking about using a Hartke Bass Attack pre-amp pedal running into a QSC 1100 (140 watts bridged) power amp, feeding a Hartke 210XL (rated at 200 watts) bass cab.

So, here's my question... Is the QSC's 140 watts (bridged) going to be enough to drive the Hartke cab rated at 200 watts? Has anyone out there built a rig similar to this??? Does it sound feasible???

Thanks in advance for any helpful tips or advice you might be able to lend!

If you're only practising and recording, I don't see a problem with it.

As a bass player you'll need five to ten times the power that you used as a guitar player. !40W will not take you too far as a working bassist. As a 2x10 user, IMO, one is not sufficient for a gigging amp. you'll need a pair.

Isn't it interesting how many guitar players are trying to come into the light?

thanks for the replys... An other option I have thought about is using a Mackie SRM450 powered PA cab. What are your thoughts on using this with the Hartke bass attack pre-amp, again, keeping in mind this will not be used as a gigging rig. Would this yield better results than the lower powered QSC/Hartke cab solution?

And, just for keeping the info straight, a bass cab does not require any certain amount of power- the ratings on the cab are merely the thermal limit of the driver, meaning, at that rated power, the voice coils will burn up. Most bass cabs handle much lower power before they start farting out on you, up to HALF their rated power.

For your intended purpose (practice and recording) it should be just fine. But, yeah, if you ever start gigging, you will most likely want more power. It also may not be enough if you're practicing with a full band - drums, guitars, etc. could drown you out.

The Mackie powered cab would probably not be satisfactory. It may be ok for practice, but it will probably fart out on you before your other setup will - at least that is my experience when I have used my Carvin sound system for practicing.

Will the Hartke pedal drive a power amp?
