Question about SWR Super Redhead

Sign in to disble this ad
When I power this amp on with the internal speakers turned on it sends a jolt to the speakers resulting in a boom. Is this normal for this amp? I turn the speakers off, then power the amp and turn the speakers back on. If I'm running an extension then the extension goes boom unless I unplug it.

This is normal for SWR amps, unfortunately.

My SWR Silverado only does that if I have the volume turned up. If the volume is turned all the way down I don't get the boom.

My SM400S always thumped the speakers when it was in stereo mode but was always quiet in bridge mode. Never could figure that one out but it is common to SWR amps.

My Super Redhead and the three Baby Blues I've had all did it. Never struck me as an especially harmful sound.

I never turn on or off my Workingman's without the speakers bypassed for that reason. Stuff like that irks me.

SWR stated in the SM-400 manual that to alleviate the thump a component would be required that would alter the sound. The Acoustic 360 could really make a thump.

Anyway it's not harmful. If you aren't making way more boom in a session of playing then you need to kick your playing up a notch or two.

Ok, I just found it rather annoying and was wondering if it was a problem with the amp, as I bought it used.
