Question about tweeter

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm building a bass rig. If I use a tweeter, I need to also use a 1.5k high pass crossover......is that correct? Also, the knob you see on the back of most cabs, that is pretty much a volume pot for the tweeter correct? AND do I just wire it in series with the crossover? One last thing, what is a good tweeter to install in a 4x10

If you are in fact building yourself a cabinet you would be better off with a midrange driver rather than a tweeter. Have a read through the Fearful threads for more information and how to wire an Lpad into the circuit.

Too many newbie questions IMO, which doesn't portend a good result.

+1. Even better, build a fEarful, superior to a 4x10 in every way.

Or, to take a step back further...

In building your own cab, what are you trying to do that you can't do in a readily available 4x10? Do you have specific design goals, a particularly good/different idea or some kind of stellar speakers you're trying to build around?

While you can certainly throw together a box, insert some speakers and have a 'working' cabinet, but the deck is stacked against you for it sounding decent (even as good as a commercially designed cab) unless you've done some real leg work on how bass cabinets function, how to design them properly, and the specifics of speaker specifications.

I'd never discourage anyone from trying to build a cabinet, but I WOULD encourage anyone who wants to try that they should spend plenty of time researching and studying before picking up a piece of wood, a tool or buying a speaker.

It's only for my sake of learning. I've been building guitar cabinets for a few years but I'm not a bass player. So I know nothing in that area.

With the low frequencies involved, there's a lot more going on with driver/box interaction/port tuning and getting the whole thing to work together as a system. Read through the links I posted in your other thread and download WinISD Pro for predicting response below about 200hz. Refer to driver datasheets for what the mids/highs are going to do. Also read up on dispersion and discover why you should never mount 4 speakers in a square (even though you see it everyday in both bass and guitar cabs).

Go for a fEarful, seems to be the best way to go for DIY.

Guitar cabs can be built by slapping speakers in a box. Bass cabs cannot.

That pretty well sums it up.

A guitar cab isn't too far beyond just being an amp stand, or something to keep the speakers from rolling around on the floor.

Why exactly do you want a tweeter? Lots of cabs do not have them.

If you're going to build a 2-way cab, a midrange driver might be better.

Most tweets need to be crossed over at 3.5khz thereabouts, research crossover design as well. Good luck.

The OP hasn't expressed any desire to biamp.
