Question, Can I hook up a 100 Watt head to a 300 Watt Cab?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, i've been reading around and researching for a while, but I couldnt seem to find a straight answer! So i've turned here hoping you guys could help me, I apologize in advance if its a simple question

Well my question is, can you hook up a 100 watt head to a 300 watt cab? Lets say that they're both rated at 8 ohms

Is 300 watts the maximum the cab can put out, meaning that I could use a 100 watt head and be fine, or does that mean that I MUST find a head thats 300 watts?

Please and thanks in advance!

x2,

I use a 200 watt head (4 ohm minimum load) into a 400 watt 8 ohm cab for a number of years, sounds and works great.
You’re good with the 100 watt head and 300 watt cab.

Yes, you just need the correct speaker cable.

Cabs don't put out watts. Some time (a lot, actually) spent here would be time well spent:

I can't recall the last time I saw it, but some home audio speakers are rated over a range of power, e.g., 10 to 150 watts. I sure wish that would be adopted as a convention for expressing power handling limits of speakers generally.

And to answer the original question with another question: will you damage a 12 oz. drinking glass if you pour only 4 oz. of water into it?

Not so long as there's 8 oz. of Scotch in there with it.

On second thought, screw the water.

If it were the other way around (300 watt head into 100 watt cab) then you'd be in trouble.

But it's fine for you.
