Question for JimmyM regarding Ampeg 810e

JimmyM I have a question for you, if I bought a new Ampeg 810e would you recommend me getting replacement U.S.A. Eminence 810 speakers to put in the cabinet or just stay with the oversea Eminence 810's that already come with the cabinet.
And are the cabinets still being made with birch plywood.
Thanks in advance,
John

Don't think anyone will recommend replacing the speakers in a new cab. Your best be, if you are planning that sort of shenanigans, is get the new one and try it, then you'll know if the speakers need to go.

Why not just pm jimmy?

No need...I'm here.

I wouldn't replace the speakers in the new 810e. They're damn good. And yes, the cabinets are made with baltic birch plywood, though "still" is the wrong way to describe it, since pretty much all Ampeg cabs made from the early 90's till 2006 were made with OSB.

I didn't either until some folks started posting pics of their earlier cabs with torn tolex. Seen OSB in cabs made as early as 92. I don't think the Skunkworks cabs were made with OSB (could be wrong about that, but I'm giving SLM the benefit of the doubt), but the 810e's and all Ampeg cabs that came out after the Skunkworks heads were sold through were.

OSB? Is that some kind of composite or pressed wood?

Oh... and Jimmy and others may answer my question. Thanks.

Also known as bugger board. Void free, heavy, dense but does not stand up to moisture real well, easily damaged if unprotected.

JimmyM 02-21-2013 11:52 AM

OSB is a type of chipboard. A more sturdy kind, but still...

From what I've heard, I wouldn't replace speakers in a new cab just for the sake of replacing them. If your speakers need replacing, I recall reading about Weber and Fliptops having some good Neodymiums that sound pretty close to old CTS squarebacks. You can dig up Kringle77's thread.

Oriented Strand Board

OSB is an OK material. It's a whole lot less expensive than Baltic birch. We used to call Baltic birch "commie ply," since it came from eastern Europe. We thought so anyway. OSB gets used for house wall and roof sheathing, floor underlayment, and all kinds of things. It's not as prone to falling apart when it gets wet as MDF or particle board. It isn't beautiful like Baltic birch, but it is stable and usually plenty strong for what it gets used for.

So the newer 810e cabs for 2013 have some type of OSB for cab material or is it actual Baltic Birch ply?

I personally can't speak to the newer "Classic" 810s, but the Heritage is birch.....

Actual baltic birch ply, no boogerwood whatsoever. The last cabs with OSB were made in early 2006. Even the Portaflex cabs and SVT 210av's are made with plywood. It's not baltic birch, but it's solid plywood.

gwangi 02-22-2013 06:42 AM

Okay Jimmy one last question are the 2013 810e cabs are they still made in Vietnam?

grendle 02-22-2013 06:43 AM

mine is a booger wood 92, one of the dark ones, love it honestly.

spector_boogie 02-22-2013 08:08 AM

Anyone know the weight diffs on the OSB vs. Birch cabs? I mean I know they're both heavy but still... lol
