| Question re: amp cuttiing and out

So, I'm a newer bassist, and I'm not that knowledgeable about repairs yet. Any help is appreciated.
I just picked up a Peavy basic 112 amp for 10 bucks of Craigslist. The original price was going to be $40, but the price was cut down because it wasn't working when I went to try it out. The amp was a bit scratch at lower volumes, and once you turned the master knob past 5, it cut out completely. I've checked my cables and my bass, both are working fine.
I decided to buy the amp figuring at worst I could tinker with it a bit. Learn how an amp works, ect. But when I got the amp home, I realized that if you give the master knob *just* the right nudge, the sound cuts back in. It sounds fine. It gets plenty loud without scratching, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the diaphragm.
My question is this: could it be that there's a bad connection or a short on the master knob itself--which should be an easy fix--or is it something more serious? If so, should I just scrap the amp and cut my losses instead of trying to get costly repairs?
If I had to do something really expensive I'll probably just take it apart to see how it ticks.
Ps if any more info is needed or if something isn't clear, ask and I'll clarify.
