Question re: upcoming Avatar cab purchase

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all,

Longtime lurker, first time poster...

So I'm buying a Ashdown Klystron 1000 head tomorrow to pair with my Avatar 2x12 cab (older, 1000watt handling version). However, I'd like to make use of the stereo amp output of the head. I'm thinking of getting an Avatar 2x10 to stack on top. However the newer Neo cabs are rated @ 500W handling.

So, should I get a 4-ohm version which would be feeding it 575 watts? Or should I get an 8-ohm version which I presume would feed it a lesser amount of wattage than 575. I seem to hear conflicting views on whether I should have more wattage-to-handling (more headroom) or vice versa (won't blow the speakers).

Keep in mind, I play in a fairly loud band and will likely need to turn the amp up from time to time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance TB'ers.

I suggest getting another 2x12 at whatever Ohms the one you have is. Then you can use one for small gigs and both for larger ones and never have to worry about phasing issues or overpowering one of the cabs. Cheers.

There is only one Avatar cab I would ever consider. The 153. But, I'm biased

Thanks for the tip kosmicwizard. Another question, would getting an avatar 1x12 possibly cause a phasing issue?

It's an aesthetic thing where I don't want a monster stack of two 2x12s. I think a 2x12 with a smaller cab on top (2x10 or 1x12) of it is a little more humble looking and would probably draw a little less attention.

All of the watts talk is moot. The useful power handling of any cab is limited by the driver displacement, not the thermal wattage rating. The 1000w rating of the 2x12 is particularly spurious, as the Delta 12LF drivers used will only take roughly 150 watts each before reaching their excursion limit. The neo drivers have the same excursion limit. Whatever you decide on you should have both cabs with the same impedance.

Sorry for the dumb question, but does the impedance have to match even if this amp has two independent power outputs (575w + 575w)?

The only reason I ask is because I may now have a secondary 8ohm cab available to me.
