A question for you pro luthiers out there.
I had some amp work done by a pro luthier. He's done great work for me in the past on my basses and guitars and I like working with him - nice guy, explains what he did very well - so I figured I would stick with him on this amp job.
On this job I gave him 2 late 60's solid state heads, same make and model, and asked him to fix them up for me. He bench checked them both (for a reasonable fee) and told me the price to make them working was about $250 each. I agreed and paid the price.
On pick up day, he walked thru the list of things he swapped out, fixed, tested, etc. I brought them home and the first one (amp a) had a lot of knob noise (which I considered a rookie thing to miss), so I brought it back to him. While that one was with him again, I tried the other one (amp b). Amp b played fine on one channel, but the other channel would cut out after it warmed up. So when amp a came back, amp b went back in.

Now he had amp b for a while, which was fine, because I wasn't using either of them to practice or play, so I was in no rush. He finally gets it back to me, and I realized I never tested amp a when it came back, so I tested them both, and realized they were both still cutting out once warmed up and playing even at low, non-band levels. So I call him up and explain the problem, and he's thinking that amp a was fixed and now something else broke which is normal for old gear (aka not his problem), but I explain that it was never right, couldn't have been because I didn't use the amp at all. So they both go back, he does more luthier magic on them, and calls me to say he can make one good one using parts from both machines, and maybe he can refund me something. About 6 or so weeks go by and he calls me up, asking if I am going to pick up the amps which have been ready for several weeks. No one told me, but fine. I ask about the partial refund, he says he has many hours invested in the project and I was paying for his time. My feeling is that I paid for him to fix up this stuff, and he should stand behind is work, good or bad.
Before I get to far into a pissing match with him or consider taking the loss and finding a better tech, tell me... am I off base here or should he give me a refund of some amount to reflect his inability to deliver to me what he contracted to do?
