Question on using an Ampeg SVT-3pro Pre out Poweramp in

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a rack compressor I like using on my bass rig, but I thought it might be nice instead of running it before the amp, to be able to compress the already adjusted preamp signal. Would putting it in the effects loop do this or would it work better to try to run it between the preamp out and the power amp in? I don't know where in the line the direct out takes the signal too so if I want the signal going to the FOH compressed, would one or both of these still work, or would putting it before the preamp better?

Run it in the loop, which is post-eq.

Preamp out is direct preamp output for use with an external power amp, while power amp in - with an external preamp.

One more detail: the effects loop is before the master volume, the preamp out is after. You don't want to have to readjust the compressor every time you tweak your volume!

I think the owner's manual (available on the Ampeg web site) has a nice block diagram illustrating this.
