Questions about a Genz Benz Neox 112 T

Sign in to disble this ad
I can pick one of these up locally, but I have a few questions:
  1. What do they sound like (EX: Deep, acticulate, wooly etc.)
  2. What would be a decent price to buy in good condition with a new driver?
  3. Would I be able to use as a home practice with my STM-900?
Thanks!

In order

1) AFAIK they're not discontinued - still being made.
2) They can get nice depth and is versatile, but the cabinet to my ear is very articulate and inherently leans toward a "modern" sound. Can definitely get grindy if you want it to. Many have said it's the "best 15" cab they've ever used".
3) As in a replacement driver? Is it a Genz replacement driver?
4) Yes. Use your ears, don't slam the bass knob, and you'll be good to go.

Because it SOUNDS like a 15. Deep yet very articulate. I have one currently and it is a VERY nice cab. I am using mine with a Shuttle 6.0 and it's great, super light, and everyone says "WOW" at the tone. Good used prices are around 350-400 but I don't know what it is or sounds like with a replaced speaker.

only grab it if it is a direct replacement -- i.e. the same speaker that it came with from the factory.

Sealed cabs have more flexibility in terms of replacement drivers. Ported cabs require a speaker that suits the dimensions.

I have the 212, and it kills. Consensus on TB seems to be that two of the 112s is better than the 212. So the 112 must be pretty awesome. I haven't played out with my 212 for a long time, as it sounds best when I'm pushing it a little harder than my is called for by my jazz outfit needs. Maybe offer to buy it without the driver? Price a good replacement driver first.

Well according to the seller, it was a direct replacement driver from Genz. I can get it for $300, so it sounds like a good deal huh? I will let you guys know how I make out.

Thanks for all of your input.

Good price. I've bought 2 in the last 3 months. I paid around 325-350 for them. I think they are great cabs. I really like the sound. The only down side, for me, was the placement of the handle. It's good for carrying but not if you are trying to put a micro head (shuttle 9,0) on it and use the tilt back feature. A micro with tall enough feet will be fine but Genz heads will not sit flat on the top. This is a very small downside and can be cured with a piece of rubberized shelf liner from Home depot or Lowes. Genz can provide taller feet, but if you use one of their bags, the head won't fit in it. Just thought you might want to know.
BTW, talking to Jeff @ Genz, he said the newest NeoX 112T has a different kind of handle. It may be a moot point if you would be buying new.

OT,

Thanks for the info!

I used to own 2 EPI UL-112 cabs that had that same handle placement issue. I already have the shelf lined material, so it looks like this might be a good deal after all.

AtomicPunk hit it on the head - very deep, excellent bass response, good clarity.

As long is it is indeed a direct replacement then no worries. $300 would be a solid price for that cab. Happy hunting!

If you get into the cab, it should have a white tag on the speaker. The driver is made by Eminence for Genz and should have GNX 12300. Other numbers are 67-0809B 0157L2. I think the GNX and the 67- number is significant in verifying the replacement is OEM. Also, while you're in there, cable tie the speaker wire from the panel to the side of the cab. On one of my cabs there was an "after note" buzz from certain notes. It turns out that the speaker wires were long enough to lay on the cone and were vibrating at certain frequencies. Drove me nuts til I found it.

OT,

Thanks again for the additional info. I have an email in the GB, to verify that this transaction actually took place. The seller seems to know his stuff, and even metioned a few people at GB by name that he was in correspondence.

I own a 112 and the 212 cabinet. I haven't used the 212 in quite some time. the 112 acts as my stage monitor for bass because we carry our own FOH.

It is deep and articulate cab. I pair with a Shuttle 6.0. Occassionally I have done small gigs without the big FOH and it was definitely powerful to handle the situation.
